Stingray Awards to George Burke, GOIN' and HYC
R. Strother Scott on Tuesday September 6, 2011 09:16AM
FBYC's own Rear Commodore George Burke was awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy by John McCarthy, Chief Judge at the event. George sailed REVEILLE in the races, and then came ashore and worked really hard to make sure the land activities worked well - and indeed they did. Thank you George.
Dennis Hannick and the crew of GOIN' won their fleet and the Brenton S. Halsey Jr. Memorial Trophy as the top boat at Stingray. The crew of GOIN' is pictured with three of Brent's children.
Finally, Hampton Yacht Club held the Potts Southern Bay Challenge Cup. This year Hampton Yacht Club, represented in the competition by Leroi Lissenden's VOODOO 2 and Bob Mosby's CYRANO, successfully defended it's grip on the trophy. Southern Maryland Sailing Association and host Fishing Bay Yacht Club were the other two clubs contending.
Thanks to John Hubbard for the pictures.

Jon Deutsch Wins the Congressman's Cup for Outstanding Sportsmanship
David G. Porter on Tuesday August 7, 2007 10:44AM
On Saturday, Jon noticed that some sailors forgot their clew tie-downs which holds the clew of the sail to the end of the boom. Without a clew tie-down, the sail is less efficient and the boat goes slower. On Sunday, with properly rigged boats, the boast-speed of all the competitors was much more even and the racing was significantly more competitive.
The race management team took note of Jon's efforts and selected him as the recipient of the award for sportsmanship out of the huge number of competitors in the Albacore, Hampton One Design, Buccaneer, Mobjack, Moth, Laser and handicap fleets. Compared to what Jon contributes to local Laser sailing through his efforts as District Chairman for Laser District 11 (covering Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Delaware) and as Laser Fleet captain at FBYC, his contribution to the Governors Cup Laser fleet was small, but it is great to see that they were so richly rewarded.
Congratulations Jon!

Nominations Needed for 2001 Awards

We must be living right. For nearly all of Junior Week we had beautiful warm weather including a full range of wind conditions on Fishing Bay from a 15-knot souwester to a full fish frying drifter at midweek. Sure the nettles made a prematurely prolific appearance along with fiesty hords of noseeums in the evening on a night or two, but by and large we were living very large. The kids tried on their sailing shoes with the help of some of the best coaches you'll find anywhere and I can't believe they didn't make some new friends. Best of all, they added to their enjoyment of the sport of sailing with memories that should last them a lifetime. Truth be known, I'd bet the parents had some fun hangin out at the clubhouse with their colleagues and a sundowner in the evening. Don't let on but just because its called Junior Week, this IS supposed to be fun for the parents as well.
