John Koedel on Saturday April 14, 2012 09:12AM

DCA.jpg The Deltaville Community Association, Inc. would like to thank all the members of the FBYC that so generously donated money to help re-build our facilities after the tornado of April 16, 2011. All but the landscaping has been completed. We are holding an open house on Saturday April 21st from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. A light lunch will be provided and all of the facilities will be open for your inspection. We hope that as many of the FBYC members as can will come to see what you helped accomplish for the Deltaville community. In addition, the Southside Sentinel issue of April 19th will have an insert with a complete listing of everyone that helped us over this past year. THANK YOU.

Nanuq Finishes Ft. Lauderdale to Key West Race

Jon Deutsch on Sunday January 15, 2012 10:16PM

Glenn & EmilyNanuq and crew sailed their way to a 2nd place finish in PRHF B and 6th overall in the Ft. Lauderdale to Key West race.  Crewmember Stephanie Sweeny also won a handle of rum for the Social Media award for making the most posts about the progress of the racing on the SORC Sailing Facebook page.

The race started Wednesday afternoon with 5' seas in 20knots with a course leading the fleet upwind.  By the next morning the wind had disappeared almost entirely and Nanuq found they were able to make better progress under spinnaker with the pole on the deck.

FBYC completes $10,000 campaign for the NSHOF

George W. Burke on Friday October 14, 2011 11:46AM

IMG_8538aFishing Bay Yacht Club is Founding Member of the National Sailing Center & Hall of Fame, which requires a $10,000 donation to their capital campaign. We have reached the goal of our FBYC Campaign and last night at the Board meeting Strother Scott, Fundraising Volunteer, presented the Flag Officers the 79 checks totaling $10,220 that had been collected over the summer.

The 79 donors listed on http://www.fbyc.net/Access/Members/NSHoF/Names_html (a members only link) only include one name per donation and obviously many came from couples. FBYC would like to single out several donations where more explanation is needed than just the donor name. Carol Lytton's donation was made in memory of her late husband Charles Lytton. Her thought was that the mission of the NSHOF was exactly suited to the things Charles was interested in. Sydna Street's donation was also made thinking about her late husband Bill Street. She wrote that Bill would have supported this cause.

NSHOF

The donation represent contributions from 79 club members and each of them with receive a personal acknowledgement and receipt from the NSHOF after George Burke sends in all the checks and the names and US Mail address of the donors. But in fact the gift will be reported by the NSHOF as a $10,000 gift from Fishing Bay Yacht Club, and we are listed as a $10,000 Contributor on the List of Contributors along with 22 other Founding Member Clubs.

No more donations are needed to fulfil our commitment.

Thank you all very much.

Hurricane Irene

Jon Deutsch on Wednesday August 24, 2011 09:03AM

The current storm track for Hurrican Irene shows it passing just to the east of the Virginia Coast on Sunday.  Although we will likely be spared the worst of it, we are still expecting severe conditions.

Just a reminder that all slip holders should make plans to reinforce all dock links and are responsible for their boats and any damage they cause.  FBYC does not have the resources nor responsibility to look after all of the boats at our docks.  The same is true for any boats in the dry sail lot and small boat parking lot - please secure your boats well ahead of the storm.

Ware River Governor's Cup Hampton One Design WinnersALBACORES and BARNEY HARRIS win 47th VIRGINIA GOVERNOR'S CUP.  Sailing in extremely stiff wind (18 - 25 knots) and rough seas on Saturday, and in extremely hot temperatures Sunday, a tough group of 55 small boat sailors raced their brains out on the Ware River over the weekend.   At the end of it all, the Albacore Class got in the most individual starts (among class members) and, therefore, the winner of that class, Barney Harris and crew Leigh (1-2-1-1-1) carried home the  Gov Cup keeper.   This was the 47th time Ware River Yacht Club has run the Governor's Cup.  CLASS WINNERSAlbacore (12 boats): Barney Harris and Leigh;  Buccaneer (7 boats): Jeffrey Moore and Jolie Homsher;  Hampton One Design (5 boats): Latane Montague and Allison;  Laser (10 boats): Ware River Governor's Cup Laser WinnersJake Spratcher;  Tri-Foil Moth (5 boats): Joe Bousquet;  Mutineer (7 boats): Jerry Thompson and Bernard;  Portsmouth Handicap Fleet (3 boats): Fred (Emery) Nemeth and Caitlin Nemeth; Sunfish (6 boats): Brian McGinnis.  The Sunfish were competing for their Mid-Atlantic Championship.  Event Chairman - Clayton James; PRO - Rick Klein  (Note: In addition to the Governor's Cup Regatta (adults), also being sailed was the a junior event along with a separate Optimist event - complete results for all three regattas are available at the Ware River Yacht Club website.)

Prophet's Trip to 2011 Marblehead NOOD at CYC

R. Noel Clinard on Thursday August 4, 2011 11:27AM

0728011435The crew of "Prophet" (Sonar 725) enjoyed the 2011 Marblehead NOOD on July 28-31 at the splendid Corinthian Yacht Club at the tip of the Neck in Marblehead, MA.  Noel Clinard and Lud Kimbrough towed the boat up, and Noel back, for a trip of 1465 miles.  Mike Karn flew in to Boston and Paul and Julie Ann Wash drove separately.  Lud, Noel, Mike and Paul sailed in a fleet of 24 Sonars skippered by many of the best members of the class, while Julie Ann tended our needs ashore and saw every sight (and whale) withoin 100 miles.  Although the results were humbling: (22-22-18-20-21-23-12-[24]-24) they improved their understanding of the finer points of tuning the Sonar rig and sailed in fabulous weather in a spectacular sailing venue with 164 boats of numerous classes ( Etchells 22, IODs 10, J 30s 6, J 105s 31, Rhodes 19 30, Sonars 24, Town Class 10, Vipers 19).  They suffered most on the last day in light air and heavy current.  See results here.

Upgrade Completed on News Web pages

R. Strother Scott on Monday July 18, 2011 02:38PM

We have recently upgraded the way news is viewed and posted on www.fbyc.net.   The new technology eliminates the need for the news poster to be familiar with html, plus it includes new search capability, and the requisite “Like” and “Tweet” links for Facebook and Twitter.

The downside of the upgrade is it resides on a different server, and requires a different set of login credentials.  On the "posting of news articles" part of the web site the www is replaced by new so the site is  http://new.fbyc.net/news/

And you must login to the new server in order to post a news article.  Most of you are familiar with logging in to the current site, and on the red navigation bar you will see your name in the top left corner, and links to Members, Board, Event Mgr or whatever on the top right.

Boat US update on GPS regs

R. Strother Scott on Thursday July 14, 2011 10:55AM

Dear BoatU.S. Member,

As a result of a new proposal to use radio bandwidth right next to the existing GPS service, the future reliability of the GPS system across the United States is now in question.  We encourage you to contact the FCC during a short 30-day public comment period, to help them understand the public’s need for continued, reliable GPS signals for safe navigation on boats, in cars, and for so many other daily uses.

Background:  Earlier this year, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) gave conditional approval to a private company, LightSquared, to begin a nationwide broadband service adjacent to the radio spectrum used for GPS.  After concerns from user groups (including BoatU.S.), the FCC required significant testing and a report for potential conflicts with aviation, cellular, navigation, and four other GPS uses before this proposal could move forward.  In that June 30th report the navigation sub-team concluded  “that all phases of the LightSquared deployment plan will result in widespread harmful interference to GPS signals and service and that mitigation is not possible.”

Jackson Creek to be dredged

http://www.ssentinel.com/index.php/news/article/jackson_creek_to_be_dredged/ by Larry S. Chowning

The Middlesex County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to approve a $97,575 bid from Docks of the Bay construction company to dredge a portion of the mouth of Jackson Creek in Deltaville.

The project will be 75% funded through a Port Authority grant. The board agreed to fund $13,125.

Keith Ruse spoke for landowners on the creek and said they will fund the other $13,125 to complete the project.

County attorney Mike Soberick told county supervisors not to accept the bid until the private sector has written the county a check for the $13,125. “That’s just good business,” he said.

Cyane Crump to sail in Atlantic Ocean Racing Series

R. Strother Scott on Wednesday May 25, 2011 02:21PM

Cyane Crump will race with FBYC member Rives Potts' Carina in three races for the Atlantic Ocean Racing Series (AORS): (1) the Annapolis-Newport Race starting June 3; (2) the Transatlantic Race 2011 starting June 26; and (3) the Fastnet Race starting August 14. The TR 2011 is the centerpiece of the AORS, which includes the Pineapple Cup – Montego Bay Race, RORC Caribbean 600, the Annapolis to Newport Race, Rolex Fastnet Race, Biscay Race and the Rolex Middle Sea Race. Of the seven races in the AORS, three races, including the TR 2011 must be completed to qualify for a series victory. Each race is weighted equally in overall series scoring with the exception of TR 2011, which is weighted 1.5 times. All entered yachts are scored using their two best finishes in addition to the TR 2011. Carina is competing in the Annapolis-Newport, the TR 2011 and the Fastnet.

The Annapolis Newport is a longstanding race having been run essentially every two years since the late 1940's. The course heads south for 120 miles from Annapolis to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, then east to the Chesapeake Light and then northeast to Newport, RI. You can watch the race tracking on http://www.race.annapolisyc.org/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=151 starting June 3.

The Transatlantic Race is significant because this is not a regularly established race - there have only been about 25 such races in the past 100 years. The TR 2011 charts a course that stretches 2,975 nautical miles (about 3,424 statute miles) from Newport to Lizard Point, at the end of a peninsula in South Cornwall (UK). There are 32 boats entered ranging in size generally from 40' to 115' - with one massive aberration, the 289' Maltese Falcon with three 190' masts. Carina is a far more modest 48 foot aluminum hulled IOR boat built in 1969. She is a very well known boat and has raced in at least two transatlantic races in her career (winning the 1972 race). She will likely be in IRC Class 4 (Racer/Cruiser), starting with the slower boats on June 26. The faster boats start on June 29 or July 3. She hopes to finish in as little as 17 days, but the race could take up to 25 days. The big fast boats are competing for a new racing record from Newport to Lizard Point for fastest elapsed time. Race tracking should be available at the event website http://www.transatlanticrace.com/.

April 16 Deltaville Tornado at Mayo’s House

Mayo Tabb on Tuesday April 26, 2011 02:07PM (1 comment)

a kitchenAs a look out the window and see two Osprey hard at work rebuilding their half destroyed nest I am glad they survived and how lucky we all were just 36 hours ago – they seem quite content as they now have an unlimited supply of building material nearby. I decided this was the best time to put to paper the events while still fresh at mind. With the gale force winds Saturday’s day of sailboat racing was cancelled so the Double Eagle crew went different ways with Sam and Carey Mitchener and Carrie Russell having a shrimp and crab cake dinner at my house. With the high winds and statewide threat of Tornadoes the conversation turned to what to do if a tornado should come. With a ground level house there is no place to go so we decided the best place to go would be the interior cinderblock wall of the garage.

a Flight of front doorAs we were finishing dinner with Carey in the kitchen and me at the kitchen counter behind the French doors getting a second helping of first garden salad of the year Carrie looked out the window over the water and saw the last rays of the sun illuminating a white donut shaped cloud. Suddenly realizing what it was she shouted “tornado” as she jumped up to get behind a nearby wall. Hearing her shout and being conditioned from our conversation earlier I yelled “ In the garage –NOW” and headed 10 feet for the garage door as I was closest. Carrie was right with me as I headed down the three stairs to the garage floor with Carey right behind at the top of the steps. Our feet had just taken a few steps on the floor when Sam who had the farthest to go at 50 feet reached the open doorway and then it hit. The kitchen French door unit was blown completely from its frame and the resultant rush of air slammed the garage door into Sam’s back propelling him into Carey with both ended up 15 feet away on the floor under my car bumper. From Carrie’s warning to Sam’s flight was probably 10-15 seconds. All I remember was total darkness as the power failed as we went down the steps. I vaguely remember the noise but the others said it was like being between two passing trains. Thirty seconds later it was over and we emerged as light appeared from the outside.

DELTAVILLE TORNADO

Alex Alvis on Wednesday April 20, 2011 06:59PM

DELTAVILLE TORNADO - Message from Vice Commodore, Alex Alvis

As most of us are aware, a devastating tornado struck Deltaville on Saturday evening, April 16th. The Opening Day celebration was in progress at the club at the time. Many of our members sustained property damage of varying degrees. There are personal accounts of those directly witnessing and encountering the wind damage. At the time of this writing, no reports have been made of serious injury or fatalities in Deltaville. Gloucester County was not so fortunate.

FBYC is a neighbor and an integral member of the community. A fund raising effort has begun to benefit the Deltaville Community Center conducted by the Deltaville Community Association. The DCA is a central hub responsible for many elements within the community, including the Fire Department, Rescue Squad, Maritime Museum, ball park, and the Community Center along with the pool and tennis courts.

The goal is to include at least 100 people and organizations to contribute $1,000 each, thus forming the "Deltaville 100". FBYC will become one of those entities. With this notice, I want to encourage our members to make donations of any amount, or to participate as one of the "Deltaville 100". Please make the checks payable to DCA and send them to:

Rebuilding underway in heavily battered Deltaville

R. Strother Scott on Tuesday April 19, 2011 10:47PM

By Andy Jenks
DELTAVILLE, VA (WWBT) – Tuesday, the National Weather Service confirmed a separate, EF2 strength tornado (winds up to 135 miles per hour) was responsible for widespread damage in Deltaville, part of Middlesex County.
Deltaville is known for the water and the boats…until Saturday, when it became known for something else.
"As you can see, all the trees are destroyed and splintered," said resident Lydia Strickland.
It seems as if the entire town is cleaning up now. And really, there isn't much choice. Lydia gave us a tour of the worst areas.
"It's just hard to believe that there were two people in that house," Lydia said…pointing out a residence where the exterior walls were blown away.
The two people were Johnnie Walden's parents. They're recovering elsewhere now. He's protecting the land. So he lives outside in a tent, and grills on a lawn chair.
ANDY: "What kind of food do you make on that?"
JOHNNIE: "I cooked chicken on it last night. Cut it in half and grilled it on that last night. They said it was good."
But Lydia says it gets worse from here.
"There are others that are just completely flattened, or, here's the foundation...and the house is over here," she said.
Remarkably...people in Deltaville are in generally good spirits.
Sam Foster has been cutting trees since 5:00 a.m. Sunday. It will be weeks before he's finished.
"Nobody got hurt, and we're thankful for that. But we got a lot of work ahead of us to rebuild," Foster said.
That will take some time, and no tornado will let the people of Deltaville forget it.
"Look, the clock. The clock is there. I mean, the house is gone! The interior walls are there...and the clock is there," Lydia said…pointing out a wall clock that was undisturbed despite the rest of a house being destroyed.
Nobody in Deltaville was killed by the tornadoes, but the damage was significant. Authorities estimate its value to be about $6 million.

Revised Tornado Path

R. Strother Scott on Tuesday April 19, 2011 06:05PM

Tornado PathThe Blue Shape is path observed on ground and in WAVY video by Strother Scott. Yellow lines are the edges of the path per Glenn Nix's map in the Southside Sentinel - Red Crosses are "approx" location of destroyed houses marked on the Glenn Nix map. It is very difficult to match up the houses on the map with the Glenn Nix destroyed houses - so please interpret a Red Cross as a "House near the cross was destroyed".

The Google Map can be accessed here

Est Tornado Path - observations and WAVY video Based on personal observations yesterday and the WAVY aerial video http://www.wavy.com/dpp/news/local_news/chopper-10:-storm%27s-aftermath I am guessing that the blue shapes on this google map show the path the tornado followed.

You can look at the Google map here.

Personal Tornado Updates on Facebook

R. Strother Scott on Sunday April 17, 2011 06:45PM

Facebook Notes written by two members - first Carrie Russell from early this morning - talking about dinner at Mayo's house:

After "Blessing of the Fleet" today, Deltaville was hit by a tornado. It really sounds like a train racing towards you. Having dinner at friend's on Moore's Point, I felt the wind velocity intensify and saw a "white hole" ...not a hole really but the tornado. We literally dove for cover in the basement and a split second later, the tornado touched down on my friend's home and blew the doors, windows out. Looks like a war zone. Much of the contents of the house were strewn across the front yard and huge tree tops twisted off like bread sticks...unreal. Distinct path is easily seen looking northeast. The town had some major damage, came back to Richmond late last night and will go down in about an hour to help out. Boats are fine, friends are account for, no sailing today.

Tornado: Been there, done that...intense.

Note added - I understand when they went back inside the house, the dinner table was still set and the napkins remained in place.

And from Bev Crump today:

Well. It was quite a night. My daughter Cyane and I were in the middle of the tornado in Deltaville last night. Left Taylors Restaurant at about 7:45 -8:00 in heavy rain. As we turned on to Rt 33 we saw trees blowing across the road, many sparks from power lines down and pieces of the church steeple flying past. I turned into the Post Office parking lot and prayed. The noise was deafening and we watched a stand of pine trees 25 yards to our left all sheer of at about 8' level. Fortunately the car was only hit by brush and leaves but we watched big limbs and pieces of houses and debris pass on either side. After about 2 minutes it was all over and all we could see was chaos. I drove through the wreckage weaving around downed power lines and trees all over the road. Power poles sheered of, houses gone, the Zoar Baptist church demolished with roof and 2 walls down. 1/2 mile up Rt 33 no sign of the tornado. When we got to our cottage, we found that our friends who had left the restaurant about 45 seconds ahead of us were in the middle of it. A limb hit their car and smashed in the side and windows. Very shaken up but no real injuries. Back at the cottage we found we had 3 flat tires. How it happened we do not know. Thankful for a lucky miss and did not mind a night without power because we were safe. Never want to go through that again.

Tornado in Deltaville

Jon Deutsch on Saturday April 16, 2011 09:30PM

A tornado went through Deltaville around 8pm this evening. Fishing Bay Rd is currently blocked between Powells Marina Rd and Deagles rd. Everyone at opening dinner/party is safe. There are reports of homes near 33 that were leveled. Stayed tuned to our facebook page and twitter feed for further updates.

Update 10:55 pm, based on various reports of damage, here is where *I think* the tornado went through from south west to north east

Update 11:35 pm: based on more recent reports the path would have been a smidge to the right as if the line were directly over the road name 'general' at the top of the image.

Please note I was not in Deltaville, and just compiled this based on some phone and text conversations I've had with FBYC members on where the damage was. And I will be Laser sailing in Annapolis tomorrow and away from email/phone.

New US Regulations - Your Chance for Input

George W. Burke on Tuesday April 5, 2011 10:45AM

Having recently imposed new regulations for the commercial marine industry and boatyards, the Federal EPA is now focusing its attention on recreational boating. As we are learning, the members of the EPA panels responsible for these new regulations are not necessarily knowledgeable about sailors, sailboats, or the seamanship that we practice.

FBYC members have an opportunity for input. What follows is a communication from BOATUS listing links that will enable you to have a voice in this important debate of vital interest to FBYC sailors:

We've added Google Calendar Tools to www.fbyc.net

R. Strother Scott on Thursday March 24, 2011 04:10PM (2 comments)

Google Cal2 At the suggestion of Lud Kimbrough, we've added links that enable you to add any FBYC event to your Google Calendar.

To find the tools, go to the top of any of the Events pages that list multiple events - pages like One Design Events. At the top of the page - you'll notice a new row of links, right under "Printable" that says "GoogleCal" - highlighted in RED in the image. Click on GoogleCal and you will see the same list of events, and also a Google Calendar image - like the one pictured here - shows up on the same line as each event.

Click on the image on the event you wish to add to your calendar, and it will add the event to your Google Calendar.

Please let me know if it doesn't work or issues arise.

SAFETY-AT-SEA SEMINAR
Virginia Boating Course
March 12, 2011 – FBYC Clubhouse

In 2007, the Virginia General Assembly enacted a law to establish a boating safety education compliance requirement. The operators of any vessel with 10 horsepower or greater will be required to have a boating safety education course completion card on board when operating the vessel. This requirement will be phased in by age through 2016 when everyone must comply. This will include committee boat and chase boats operators as well as any auxiliary powered sailboat operator.

FBYC will be the sponsor of this course presented by Flotilla 66 of the US Power Squadron on March 12 at the FBYC clubhouse. Registration begins at 8:30 am with coffee and Danish. The class begins at 9:00 am. Lunch will be provided and the course concludes with an exam about 3:00 pm. This is a continuation of the club’s effort to provide continuing education via “Safety-at-Sea.” The cost will be $10. Sign up early on FBYC’s website www.fbyc.net/Events/2011 as space is limited. Whale sighted in the Chesapeake Bay

R. Strother Scott on Friday October 22, 2010 12:16PM

"Copyright Rappahannock Record , used with permission." October 22, 2010

Bryan, Terri and Jonathan Flagg of Deltaville and Ashland were on their boat October 10 when they spotted this whale in the Chesapeake Bay near Windmill Point. Jonathan took photos of the whale with his Blackberry. Paul Summers of White Stone and Annapolis, Md., also was fishing in the vicinity with his father and spotted the whale. They rode along beside it for about 30 minutes. “It was a very large whale,” said Summers. “I’ve done a lot of ocean fishing and seen a lot of whales. This was probably a humpback and a mature adult.” The whale was spotted in about 20 feet of water. According to Joan Barns with the Virginia Aquarium in Virginia Beach, whale sightings in the Chesapeake Bay are not unheard of but they aren’t common. Staff from the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response team also believe it was a humpback.

New Wifi Internet at FBYC

Jon Deutsch on Tuesday October 5, 2010 12:09PM

Fishing Bay Yacht Club now has a new wireless internet system for the main club house, Fannie's House and coverage for the slips. This weekend Jeremy Waters and Dixon completed installation of the new system. Gone are the two slow DSL connections and access points that we used to have. Now the system uses a single cable modem connection and commercial-grade wifi access points to broadcast a stronger signal to more of the campus and docks.

This new system will enable race committees to check weather, upload results, and upload pictures even faster. It'll also enable club members to check weather or check in with work without bogging down any of the systems.

On your computer look for the fbyc-main-house-ap or fbyc-fannies-house-ap networks. The password for both networks can be found on the members-only section of the website.

In connection with the upgrades to the internet service, we have eliminated the land line phone at Fannie’s House. A land line phone remains in the downstairs foyer of the main clubhouse.

If you have any questions about the new wifi system, contact Jeremy Waters or Jon Deutsch.

FBYC/NYYC Farewell

R. Noel Clinard on Sunday September 12, 2010 11:20AM

The FBYC Team, with its supporters, including Commodore Mayo Tabb, bid farewell to NYYC's Harbour Court after six races, for a total of 26 races in 4 days. Preliminary finishes of 9-7-10-9-10-8 placed the team in 10th out of 24 in the final standings. Results were delayed while numerous teams, including ours, were protested for going inside the prohibited area along the shore of the Naval Station, as they tried to skirt the shore upwind to avoid a massive ebb tide in light air. FBYC retired from that race, but it did not affect our standings.

The evening began with cocktails in the tent housing a Sperry Shoe Store and 2 car Jaguar Display, then moved to another tent for dinner, awards and dancing to a Blues Band. Before dinner, guests watched a video of the 2010 Invitational Cup narrated by NYYC Commodore Elwell. Awards were presented by Event Chair Dod Fraser and his Co-Chairs Will and Marie Crump. The top three teams, Eastern, Annapolis, and Newport Harbor received invitations to the 2011 Invitational Cup and the three consolation finalists received awards. During dinner, in groups of six, the other participants received framed action photos of their team and a History of the NYYC, which will be proudly displayed at FBYC. Several of the FBYC group repaired to the Bar in Harbour Court for a final gathering, cut short by the determination of some to leave at 4 am this morning. Some drove to Providence for early flights. Others will tow the RIB to Brant Beach NJ for an upcoming junior event and to Rochester NY to return the chartered Sonar.

Team Continues Replenishment in Style

NYYC Update Saturday 018 Team FBYC completed 6 more races Friday with a 7-11-5-2-12 leaving them tied for 8th in the Championship Fleet of 12, with the three leaders being Annapolis, Eastern and Newport Harbor. After racing, the Team and its supporters feasted on scalding hot steamed lobsters with corn on the cob in the regatta tent on the waterfront at Harbour Court. Today will determine the outcome of the Qualifying Series. The day dawns with continued northwest wind, cloudless skies and zero humidity, in a sailing paradise.

FBYC Team Pauses for Fun, Refreshment and Companionship

R. Noel Clinard on Friday September 10, 2010 08:49AM

NYYC DinnerLast night the FBYC Team, Coach and Entourage paused from the intensity of the Campaign for some fun, refreshment and companionship at the Clark Cooke House restaurant on the wharf in downtown Newport. In attendance were the team (Travis Weisleder, Lud Kimbrough, Ben Buhl and Rob Whittimore, their Coach, Skip Dieball, and the rest of the FBYC entourage including Shannon Weisleder, Frances and Blake Kimbrough, Mary and Jay Buhl, Mike Karn, and Noel and Meg Clinard. Commodore Mayo Tabb will join us tomorrow on the spectator fleet. The team had a very "full course meal" from Chowder and Organic Tomato salads to Seafood Linguini, wine, coffee and desserts, including "Snowballs From Hell" served in chocolate coated goblets. But, it was a long time coming.

This was but a halftime respite from the pressure of racing in an extraordinarily talented fleet in challenging and unfamiliar conditions. All this experienced against the leading boats skippered by the 2009 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year or the crew from Annapolis YC which attended numerous major Sonar regattas as part of their campaign. The sustenance of the dinner gathering only begins to offset the depravation, injuries and exhaustion leading up to it. Reflect for a moment on the experience of the FBYC team, which has literally starved itself of almost 100 pounds to meet the weight limit of 650 pounds, including a steam the morning of the weigh in, to come in at 11 pounds, under after a hair raising practice day in 20 - 30 knots in the unfamiliar J-22. Then, on day one, they raced for 6 hours in similar conditions without a break for 8 races in two types of boats, only to repeat it on day two with 6 races. Not seen in the dark comfort of the restaurant is the gash in Lud's leg that would have required 3 stitches had he gone to the hospital, now patched and bound instead, nor the skin of Travis' index finger peeled back from trimming in heavy wind and current for 14 races. Not felt is the incredible soreness the effort has inflicted on all of them.

Today, for our fellows, its stiffly back to the cockpit for two more days of back to back racing in northwest winds, ripping ebb tide, gray skies and colder temperatures. So, cheer our team on with some salve of your collective support.

FBYC Makes Cut to Championship Round

Jon Deutsch on Thursday September 9, 2010 05:54PM

DSC_0720_small Fishing Bay Yacht Club is among the top 12 teams that have qualified for the Championship Series at the 2010 NYYC Invitational Cup Qualifying Series. After completing fourteen races in 2 days in both Sonars and J22s, the team advances on to two days of championship racing on Thursday and Friday in Sonars at New York Yacht Club in Newport.

The team began the day sailing the J22 with a bullet in the first race. They followed that with a 6 and a 2 before switching to the Sonar for the final 3 races. After posting solid mid-fleet finishes with one race left, the team had an 8 point cushion for making it into the championship fleet.

In the final race of the day the FBYC had a great start. In fact it was too good. They were OCS and had to return to the starting line to clear themselves. While the rest of the fleet sailed on starboard to the left side the course, the FBYC boat headed out on port to the right. 4 legs later the team of Travis Weisleder, Rob Whittemore, Lud Kimbrough and Ben Buhl clawed their way back to a 9th place finish.

Indian Harbor was the 7th place boat 8 points behind FBYC and had gotten a bullet in the final race. But Rochester finished behind FBYC knocking Rochester out of the top 6 and allowing FBYC and Indian Harbor to claim the final two places in the group to go on to the championship series.

Invitational Cup Qualifying Series Day 1

Jon Deutsch on Thursday September 9, 2010 09:30AM

FBYC Team photo by Amy RossWednesday was the first day of racing at the NYYC Invitational Cup Qualifying Series. Our Team of Travis Weisleder, Rob Whittemore, Ben Buhl and Lud Kimbrough were sailing against some very tough competition which included past Sonar North American Champions and Olympic sailors.

The 24 teams are divided into 2 groups with one group sailing Sonars and the other J22 in the morning. Then in the afternoon they switch boats. They will do this for racing Wednesday and Thursday, then starting Friday, the top 12 teams will sail in Sonars and the bottom half in J22.

Conditions to start the regatta on Wednesday were very windy. Initially the race committee forbid the boats from flying spinnakers for the first two races. The wind abated a little bit allowing spinnakers to be used for the remaining races.

After 8 races the team is currently in 7th place (results) in their group. One point out of the final transfer spot to the big show on Friday. Thursday is the final day of qualifying. Real-time updates and pictures are being posted on the team’s Facebook Page and racing can be watched live via kattack. There's also an official NYYC Blog being updated during racing.

Good luck today FBYC!

Team Practice Video

R. Noel Clinard on Tuesday September 7, 2010 11:36PM

Travis, Rob, Ben & Lud on Narraganset Bay in heavy air with a spinnaker on a J-22.

The FBYC team finished a brutal day of practice in 20 to 30 knot winds in the less familiar J-22 in Newport Harbor, including a screaming downwind run featured in the attached video shot from the coach boat, followed by two near broaches and man overboards. After nursing their wounds and resting for a few hours, the team and its supporters attended a splendid reception on the lawn at NYYC's Harbour Court, where they were welcomed by Commodore Elwell as representatives of 24 of the nation's "preeminent yacht clubs." As one entered the reception, beneath the awning, the FBYC Burgee hung over the entry with 24 other burgees.

Tomorrow, the team will start at 1100 in the Red Fleet in Sonars in the first qualifying round with forecasted winds of 20 knots.

They posted "So the winds came in in the afternoon and we put in a second practice session from 1600 to 1830. Sea breeze at 10-14k. We had to change crew assignments for the J-22 due to the shift in layout, and after 20-30 tacks and gybes we got our 22 rhythm. Bora Gulari's team sparred with us. We feel great, and look forward to weigh in tomorrow morning and 4 practice races afterward." on the team's Facebook Page

First Practice day in Newport

0800 on Tuesday, NYYC staff hoist colors and erect 24 participating club burgees around moored and tuned Sonar Fleet for initial practice day.

The team will have a workout today and their weigh-in this morning followed by official practice races in the afternoon.

Yesterday the team spent some time practicing on a J22. The wind was light in the morning, but filled in the afternoon with a 10-14k sea breeze. The team had to alter their crew positions for that boat and after 20-30 tacks and gybes were feeling pretty comfortable in the J22.

Kattack will provide live tracking in Newport next week

R. Noel Clinard on Thursday September 2, 2010 12:42PM

Today our team departs for Newport to participate in the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup U.S. Qualifying Series. Racing begins Wednesday September 8. The NYYC has announced that Kattack will provide live, online tracking of the boats in the 2010 U.S. Qualifying Series. Supporters and members of the invited clubs, and the general public, can access the live tracking through the New York Yacht Club Event web site: http://nyyc.org/2010USICQualifying/

The New York Yacht Club will also post on its web site a daily blog, written by Brad Dellenbaugh, daily photographs and will post throughout the day the preliminary race results. Also, the FBYC Team will be updating their Facebook Page throughout the day.

The NYYC has also issued a press release Who’s Who at U.S. Qualifying Series for Next Week’s New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup . The press release mentions that Will and Marie Crump are event co-chairs, and that we should expect stiff competition - including a Sonar World Champion, and an Olympic Competitor in the Finn class.

Best of luck to our team in Newport.

USODA Layline Nationals Team Race National Championship

Jon Deutsch on Monday July 19, 2010 06:34PM

Lauderdale YC 4 Team Race National Champions

The USODA Team Race Nationals got off to another early start on day 3. Racing began at 0930 to take advantage of the predicted winds and to give the sailors the best chance of getting in the entire round before our cut off time in the afternoon.

The wind was out of the south, south-west at 13-18 knots. It was mostly cloudy in the morning and clearing around noon. A few rain clouds passed through the race course, but never dumped a significant amount of rain.

Following the 2nd round, the teams were re-grouped into Gold and Silver divisions with the top teams put into the gold division and the bottom half in the silver. The teams in the Alpha group, LISOT Blue, Lauderdale YC 4, ISV 1, and LOOT gold had the best chance of winning the championship.

2010 USODA Layline Nationals Day 2 Recap

Jon Deutsch on Sunday July 18, 2010 08:51PM

Mark Round Team Race Day 2Sailing on Sunday at the 2010 USODA Layline Team Race Nationals started early with a 0930 first warning to take advantage of the morning wind. The wind began out of the west, south-west at 8-10 knots. Since only 24 races were completed yesterday for the first round of the round robin, we had to get in 12 more races to complete the round before going on to round 2.

The Team of Lauderdale Yacht Club (#4) was the top-ranked team coming out of the first round. They were followed by the LISOT Black Team, LISOT Blue Team, and Team FOR A. Those four teams made up the top group going into round two and the rest of the teams were seeded below them in the remaining 5 groups.

Sonar Trip Redux: “Stopping By House on a Sunny Afternoon”

R. Noel Clinard on Wednesday June 16, 2010 07:12PM

Whose house this is I do not know
His house right on the interstate
From Rochester to Fishing Bay
And trucks are whizzing by my ear.

My little boat must think it weird
To stop along the road like this
Without a drop of water near
But I have memories to take.

She gives her shrouds a tinkling shake
As semis zoom around her wake
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of mountain wind in twinkling sun.

This porch is lovely and shade is deep
But I have miles to go before I sleep.

On Monday and Tuesday, your FBYC/NYYC Campaign representative drove 1000 miles to Rochester, NY and back along the stunning route of proposed Interstate 99 (aka Highway 11/15), straight north from Harrisburg, PA, to Painted Post, NY. The mission was to pick up a new chartered Sonar from Shumway Marine, the exclusive distributor. The scenery was more reminiscent of Robert Frost than of The Grateful Dead who accompanied me to Marblehead, MA, on the last journey to retreive The Estimated Prophet, but the memories were no less indelible, from the Catoctin Mountains of MD to the windmill farm in Cohocton, NY,see www.cohoctonwind.com, to the historic Little League Stadium in Williamsport, PA. Enjoy a few images of this unforgettable trip.

FBYC/NYYC Campaign Practicing in Earnest

R. Noel Clinard on Monday June 7, 2010 08:49AM

downsized_0606001105aFor the last two weekends, the club members participating in the campaign for the 2010 New York Yacht Club Qualifying Series Campaign have been ramping up their practice schedule. For several hours, four out of the last five weekend days, a dozen sailors have practiced in the campaign Sonar and two Colgate 26s generously provided by Jim Snowa and Den Roberts. The sailors have rotated through the three boats and various positions to hone their skills in each position and give those with the weighty responsibility for ultimate crew selection an opportunity to assess their talents and team work. Although temperatures have been hot, the winds have been unusually good in speed and direction. Yesterday, while landlubbers suffered excruciating temperatures ashore, the campaigners enjoyed 12 to 18 knot winds steadily from the south as they practiced offshore of Stove Point under blue skys. The practices included dozens of starts and close mark roundings. All participants are getting the benefit of sailing among the best of FBYC in intense college practice type environment. Everyone is impressed with the maneuverability, acceleration, comfort, and straight-line boat speed of the Sonar, and long term interest is growing in building a fleet at FBYC. Soon, the campaign will be adding the tonic of professional coaching to the mix, and retrieving a chartered Sonar from Shumway Marine, the exclusive distributor in Rochester, New York This will help give the Sonar crews the fun of racing in more evenly matched boats.

The Fishing Bay Yacht Club Campaign 2010

Lud H. Kimbrough on Wednesday June 2, 2010 02:36PM

Fishing Bay Yacht Club is proud to be invited to compete in the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup’s Qualifying series, a “high-profile Corinthian Classic” event in the words of Sailing World magazine.  In the inaugural Invitational Cup of 2009, 19 amateur yacht club teams from 14 nations competed in chartered NYYC Swan 42s at Harbour Court, the NYYC’s on-the-water clubhouse in Newport, R.I.

To many observers and sailing veterans, the event dramatically superseded the America’s Cup as the world’s foremost international yachting competition.  Ladies and gentlemen, FBYC is going to this party and we won’t be leaning against the wall when we get there.  To make this happen our team needs your support.

The 2009 Invitational Cup saw teams from Japan, Germany, Finland, Spain, Bermuda, Canada, Ireland, Denmark, Hong Kong, New Zealand, England, Italy, France and the United States, including the host and eventual winner, the NYYC.  Numerous yacht clubs throughout the U.S. sought to participate in the 2011 Invitational Cup, leading NYYC to establish the 2010 Qualifying Series in Sonars and J-22s to select three U.S. teams to race in the 2011 event.  NYYC extended Qualifier invitations to only 26 U.S. yacht clubs, truly a who’s who of great competition, including our regional rival, Annapolis YC.

Project Sails to Save Haiti

Mary R. Spencer on Thursday April 1, 2010 03:14PM

John and Linda Dodge of Richmond, Virginia are in the second month of their Project Sails to Save Haiti, a donation program designed to get as many used sails ( " the bigger the better but we will take anything" ) as well as spinnaker poles, lines, and anything else one might think of to construct shelter in an effort to help the over 600,000 Haitians who have been left out in the exposure due to the January 12th earthquake that killed over 230,000. With the rain season now upon them and the death toll rising, time is of the essence. John is an oncology account specialist with Cephalon Oncology and an active sailor on the sailing circuit while wife Linda is a captain with United Airlines who also shares the love of racing, Along with help from son's Kyle (UVA) and Justin (Collegiate), the couple has focused their attention on sailors of the Chesapeake Bay. Whether it's fellow members of Storm Trysail Club (all stations), Fishing Bay Yacht Club, CBYRA (all regions), US Sailing, maxi's, one design, or cruisers, they will take what you have to offer. Simply call or email John and he will arrange to pick up the gear. The couple will transport all donations to Miami where the sails will be loaded on a ship and sailed to Haiti for distribution to the homeless. The first shipment was a huge success and they look to have an even bigger load for the next sail. Their efforts continue to spread nation - wide as more sailors read about Project Sails to Save Haiti, including sailors from California, Wisconsin, Texas, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Maine. North Sails Chesapeake in Annapolis, Md (410) 263-6666 and North Sails in Hampton, Va.(804) 722-4000 have agreed to act as a drop off points for local sailors in those areas. For more information, email or call John at dodger8385@aol.com or 804-334-6950. A great time to clean out sail lockers, containers, trailers, storage sheds, and help thousands of men, women, and children in the process.

Campaign for the NYYC Qualifying Series

R. Noel Clinard on Friday March 19, 2010 01:55PM

As mentioned in a recent Commodore Tabb’s Quarterdeck Column, FBYC is one of 26 "pre-eminent American yacht Club's" invited by the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) to participate in the U.S. Qualifying Series for the next NYYC Invitational Cup. The Qualifying Series will be sailed in Newport, Rhode Island, September 8-13, 2010, and the actual Invitational Cup will be September 10-17, 2011. The Qualifying Series will feature fleet racing in Sonars and J/22s in historic Newport, R.I. – on the same waters that the NYYC conducted the America's Cup from 1958-1983. This will be the only opportunity for domestic yacht clubs to earn a place in the 2011 Invitational Cup. The top three U.S. teams from the Qualifying Series will receive invitations to the Invitational Cup, where they will join the top six teams from 2009: New York, Royal Canadian, Japan Sailing Federation, Nyländska Jaktklubben of Finland; Royal Cork of Ireland and Royal Bermuda, plus at least 10 other international teams, to be invited in the spring of 2011. The ultimate Cup will be sailed in NYYC Swan 42s.

"We wanted to respond to requests for places in our Invitational Cup, an international competition for Corinthian sailors," said NYYC Commodore Elwell. "Creating this new event will give more American clubs the opportunity to share the stage with visitors from overseas. I am pleased we are expanding competitive opportunities for the event."

This is an extraordinary opportunity for FBYC to excel on the national stage, so all reasonable efforts will be exerted to make a competitive showing for the Club within the Corinthian spirit of the event. Travis Weisleder will lead the FBYC campaign and serve as Skipper for training and for the event, with assistance from: Noel Clinard, who will serve as team logistical coordinator and reporter; Lud Kimbrough, who will integrate the campaign into the fabric of FBYC’s Long Range Plan objectives; Frances Kimbrough, who will serve as campaign treasurer; Jay Buhl, who will help coordinate training; and perhaps many others. The funding of the campaign will be provided entirely by the participants and by voluntary donations of generous interested members - which will be solicited and welcomed.

9/5/1930 – 2/27/2010

Ian G. Lorimer died on February 27, 2010 while on a cruise around the southern point of South America. He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Pat Lorimer; son, Jim Lorimer; daughters and sons-in-law, Beth Bahner and Mark Grunwald, Kathy and Ken Lemelin, and Robin and Bryan Proffitt; and six granddaughters. Ian was born in the Bronx, NY. Pat was also born in the Bronx but she was younger than Ian and did not know him when growing up even though both went to some of the same schools. After graduating from high school, Ian went on to college at Georgia Tech. It was while working as a lifeguard in the summer at Little Neck Bay off Long Island Sound that he finally met Pat. Pat left the area to go to college in Boston and Ian’s schooling was interrupted for two years when he was drafted into the Army. They were married in September 1955; and after Ian completed his final year at Georgia Tech, they moved to Chattanooga, TN where he was employed by E.I. DuPont. In 1962, DuPont transferred him to the Richmond area and he was with DuPont for 35 years until his retirement.

More Testing Needed on Mid-Level Ethanol Gasoline

R. Strother Scott on Friday January 8, 2010 03:26PM

The National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) in partnership with the Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatU.S.) and twelve other trade groups representing 90% of retail gasoline providers, almost all automobile manufacturers and a large majority of motorcycle and non-road equipment manufacturers sent a letter Wednesday to the EPA, Department of Energy (DOE) and The White House concerning the EPA's pending decision on the use of E15 and DOE's Ethanol Research Program.

This issue is important to anyone who owns gasoline-powered tools, equipment, autos, boats, and off-road vehicles or who may have safety or environmental concerns with the current proposals for increasing the amount of ethanol in the nation's gasoline supply.

November 2009 Storm - Message from Dixon

R. Strother Scott on Saturday November 14, 2009 09:43AM

Picture 260 With over 48 hours so far of high winds and as of Friday morning with 4 ½ft of water above normal high tide the Yacht Club has survived with only minor dock damage, i.e. boards missing, dock light submerged. The worst damage was to the east pier east out board pilings 4th in from the outside transient piling (Waddy and Ted’s) Piling snapped off after Waddy’s port bow line parted and was forced to take the impact of several thousand lbs all at once, with Waddy’s and Ted’s boats vying for position of slip dominance some paint was traded and just make sure that the two boats decided that Invictus should get some abuse just spread things around. No real structural damages but the boat yards will be happy and the insurance co. actually have to come off some of their ill got gains.

Picture 256 Nutcracker’s stern line part late Thursday and traded paint with Wavelength for a little while and Liquid (Dabney’s boat) broke at least 3 of the four lines that were on her and may have traded some paint with Blade Runner. John Moody’s boat broke a starboard stern line and may have rubbed the back porch a little.

Well that’s the report from the bay as of 9am. Pictures available at http://www.flickr.com/photos/fbyc/sets/72157622676633383/detail/

P.S. the Road maybe passable around noon until 3 or 4pm and again at midnight if anyone wants to try to get here. Power is on but not on the docks.

July 7, 2009 - The idea of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allowing the introduction of a fuel that has never been independently tested for use with marine engines has Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatU.S. and the National Marine Manufacturers Association (www.BoatUS.com/news/reports urging every boater in America to speak out on the issue before the July 20 federal comment period closes.

Schooner Sultana Visits FBYC…Again

Joseph L. Dennison on Monday June 22, 2009 11:11AM

The Colonial Schooner Sultana, a reproduction vessel that partnered with the Deltaville Maritime Museum and FBYC to bring the John Smith Shallop Rendezvous to Deltaville two years ago, revisited FBYC on Wednesday, June 17, during a trip north to her homeport in Chestertown, Maryland. While berthed at the end of the Fishing Bay pier, she conducted public tours for two hours in the afternoon. Later that evening, captain and crew dined with the club’s Wednesday Night Dinner crowd and received a ceremonial FBYC burgee to commemorate the visit. Vowing to fly the burgee proudly aboard ship, the crew reciprocated with a gift to the club of a Sultana poster signed by all of its members.

New Website Tools - Crew Finder and Classified Sections

R. Strother Scott on Monday June 15, 2009 04:50PM

We finally have a Crew Finder on the website that is done in such a way as a person, even if they are not a member, can register to add their name to our Crew Finder. You can see it at CREW FINDER. In order to keep computer robots from posting spam, we require the poster to pass a very easy math question before the posting is allowed.

And using the same technology, we also have a CLASSIFIED SECTION of the web site. Here you can post into any of three categories - Boats for Sale, Boats Wanted, or Other.

Enjoy - and please use these tools.

Schooner Sultana to be featured at FBYC Wednesday Night Dinner, June 17

Joseph L. Dennison on Wednesday June 10, 2009 10:17AM

The Colonial Schooner Sultana will be berthed at the Fishing Bay pier on June 17 during the weekly Wednesday Night Dinner scheduled for June 17. Members will be able to board and tour the schooner before dinner and later dine with captain and crew. This occasion will be an exciting opportunity for members and guests, young and old, to become acquainted with a replica of a historic vessel that served the British Royal Navy on the Chesapeake Bay during the late 18th century. Members need only bring a side dish to complement the main Italian-themed course to be provided by the evening’s master chef, Rip Radcliffe. Contact him at ripsail@va.metrocast.net to let him know you will be there and to arrange your dinner contribution. It will be especially important that evening to have an accurate headcount because of the interest expected to be generated by the Sultana visit.

New FBYC Neckties in Club Store

R. Noel Clinard on Tuesday October 21, 2008 07:53PM

Both old and new tie designs are now available in the FBYC Store. These ties will be available at the Awards Banquet at the Virginia Museum on November 7 at the Virginia Museum. They feature the club colors of red or blue in a "rep" stripe design with one embroidered burgee between the stripes at the wide part of the tie, as pictured here. Also available is the traditional FBYC tie with multiple burgees on a navy blue background. The latter design is also now available in a limited number of bow ties. The price is $35 per tie, both long and bow ties.

Worth It For The Price

R. Noel Clinard on Monday October 20, 2008 04:54PM

In these uncertain times, it is nice to see a validation of our own self-interested justifications for what we spend on our boats and our membership in Fishing Bay Yacht Club. Happily, I think we can rest assured that, as the Club goes forward, its Leadership will weigh carefully each and every expenditure at Fishing Bay, but will also keep an eye on the things that really matter to us all. This article, found at http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/18/business/yourmoney/18money2.html?ei=5070&emc=eta1 says it well.

Web Navigation Changes Complete - at least for now.

R. Strother Scott on Thursday October 16, 2008 09:09AM

I am pleased to report that I have completed some changes to the FBYC Site Navigation.

On the horizontal navigation across the top of the page - the Link which is in use converts to a non-link - and is a different color. In that way, you can see what link you are on, and can not click on the Club Link, if you are already on the club link. (all true except for the Events link - which doesn't use a folder structure - so we keep the Events Link active no matter what Events page you are on.)

On the sidebar - the list of links has been shortened to only the sub-folders on the selected link. I think the shorter list is better. The selected sub-link stays highlighted.

So in the picture on the left, which was taken when I was on Club/Membership - you will see that Club in the top line has a white background and is not a link - and Membership on the sidebar is blue, meaning that is the page I was one.

If I can figure out how to do it, I may change the top line to show all the Links under Club and the rest when you move the mouse over the links - like you can see happens on http://www.yourunitedway.org/ or www.lumberliquidators.com

Please enjoy and keep the comments coming.

Web Site Navigation Changing

R. Strother Scott on Thursday September 18, 2008 11:27PM

If you click on any of the links along the top of the Page, like Club, Sailing, Fleets, you will now see that navigation to pages within those sections are found by taking a look at the list on the left side of each of those pages.

On the Sailing Page, the links on the left currently look like the image to the left. If you click on a different section, like Club, then the sections under Sailing will disappear, and a set of links to pages under Club will open up.

And I will be adding more links - like Members - to the left sidebar. My biggest problem is trying to decide if better names for the links Sailing, Fleets, WebTools, might better be Divisions, Participate, Sailing Info, etc. or what.

Formerly, such links were found along the top of the page - as a sort of a third row, which changed often depending which page or sub page you were on. This new list is more stable, and will allow users to find pages which are buried in the web site more easily. This is a work in progress, so please bear with me as I continue to conform the web pages to the presentation.

There will be glitches as I work to make it all work together. But if anyone does have comments, I welcome them.

Changing Website Around

R. Strother Scott on Wednesday September 10, 2008 04:56PM

A member has volunteered to assist me in improving the navigation and usefulness of the web site. In anticipation of making some changes to how it might look, I have moved some pages around, and hence you may run across links that do not work. At this moment, missing pages, the Classified, Weather, Links, might be found under Sailing or Web Tools.

If you want a peek at the navigation that we are proposing to the Board on Thursday, please take a look at the top and left side of http://www.fbyc.net/kristen/Club. Notice how the links to Club and Fleet change as you click from one to the other. The idea is to show the users the links in an easier and clearer fashion. A few of you with higher level permissions will be able to see the proposed left side menus at http://www.fbyc.net/SiteMap3.

Lasers have now been moved to http://www.fbyc.net/Fleets/Laser. I know the links do not all work correctly, but please let me know if you have any comments on the suggestion.

P.S. There are no changes being made to anything related to events.

P.P.S. If the Board agrees to make these changes, I should get them all implemented with a week or so. And then I will need to find and fix broken links throughout the site.

Weather Watch for everybody

R. Strother Scott on Friday September 5, 2008 04:04PM

Remember there is a new buoy off Stingray Point that gathers wind and weather data. http://www.buoybay.org/site/public/explore/. Just run the mouse over the bouy and it will display current conditions, or click and it will get you more data than you really need.

And as a reminder, at the bottom of every FBYC web page is a Link to the usual weather links found at http://www.fbyc.net/Club/Weather including the National Hurricane Center website at http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ .

Website Update

R. Strother Scott on Thursday August 21, 2008 02:05PM

Spam Problem - We are still working on our spam problem and the results are still not where we want them. For example, we learned one of our forwards was forwarding about 20 spam messages per day to a member, but because he had a good spam filter, it was not a big deal for him. But for us, it causes us to be rated as a terrible sender of spam. As suggested last month, I have now deleted all email forwards at www.fbyc.net except for a couple who have asked to keep them. Hopefully that will eliminate a major problem.

On-line Entry - minor change - In response to people inadvertently entering a quantity of items far in excess of what they want - the most recent being 100 Leukemia Cup entries @ $100 each - the number of items you can enter on the On-line entry form is now restricted to single digit, so it is now impossible to enter a number larger than 9. If you must have 20 tee-shirts, or 12 dinner tickets, you can increase the number using Change Quantities feature on the payment page. People who mistakenly pay for more than they intended to buy will have the 5% credit card charge that FBYC has to pay deducted from any refund!! (Wondering why? Just ask us how much the most recent customer error cost FBYC!)

Home Page redesign – the board approved the concept of removing all but the latest results from the home page and putting them on a More Results and Photos page – which has now been done. Hopefully it will be easier for readers to see the latest news postings and the links to register for the next 10 events.

Crew Finder – Next is a rework of the Crew Finder – to make it more useful to both skippers and crew. We plan to offer skippers to ability to add themselves as “Desirous of receiving calls from people who want to crew” just like crews can list themselves as available. In that regard, we have eliminated the iwanttosail email list – which hasn’t been used and seems to be dated. The first draft of possible Crew Finder text is under Read More.

Please keep the good ideas coming.

Moving things around on the Home Page

R. Strother Scott on Friday August 15, 2008 01:06PM

Last night at the Board Meeting, we discussed Jon Deutsch's suggestion that we adjust a few things on the top of the Home Page. The Board deciding it would be a good idea to remove the "clutter" of results and photos at the top of the Home Page and put most of them elsewhere.

This morning I started that process, and have considerably shortened the number of items displayed at the top. Please Notice the Link to Many More: Results and Photos which will take you to a page with most of the last 6 months Results and Photos.

Please Note - I have now added a list of the most recent volunteers recorded into our system on the left column of Results and Photos . To a large degree they are just as important as the Results. Note that the names are only visible to Members.

The Links to the CREW FINDER has also been minimized, and we hope to add a few good ideas to the CREW FINDER so it will work for all. There is a suggestion that just like Prospective Crew Members can register their interest, Skippers who are always on the lookout for new crew may register their needs.

Thanks to Chip Hall who has agreed to draft some helpful text for the Crew Finder Page - and to Mason Chapman who is going to do the same for a "Welcome" statement.

Please expect to see more changes and let me know if you have any comments for further improvement.

Olympic Sailing Links

R-Home Magazine almost sold out.

R. Strother Scott on Monday August 4, 2008 07:21PM

I went to 4 different bookstores before I found my very own copy of Carrie Nieman Culpepper's article in Richmond Home magazine. I have scanned it, and a pdf of the article is available - a 12 MB file - as to first link on the the Publicity Page

Great photos of the Club and our neighbors.

Do you use a @fbyc.net Mail Forward?

R. Strother Scott on Wednesday July 23, 2008 04:04PM

In investigating the Spam problem with our Email Server, we have run across one specific fixable issue as follows:

About 150 people who have registered to use the web site have set up an email forward account with a fbyc.net email address as part of getting a user account. For them, mail which is sent to their email @fbyc.net is forwarded to their real email address. The forwarded email includes both real email and spam although most of it is probably spam. Comcast, Gmail and other services receiving this forwarded email from fbyc.net see such a high percentage of spam that they treat all email from fbyc.net as junk. This includes email from our mailing lists, event registration confirmations, and volunteer-related emailings. We would like to stop forwarding spam which means we must eliminate our email forwards. Please let me know if this will cause you any problems.

On this web page is a list of all our email forwards. We suspect that only very few of you, if any, are using the email forward accounts which have been set up. If we remove the email forwards, obviously that email will stop, so please let me know if you want us to keep your email account.

Sailing instruction still available!

Veronica C. Waters on Saturday July 19, 2008 01:17PM

Sailing instruction still available!

The summer is flying by . . . junior week is now a distant memory . . . but those club boats are so inviting! Your opportunities to take advantage of coaching at the club are not gone!

Our next class is Beginning Optis (parents, you can do it too!), from July 28-31. For $150 (members), you can have 6 hours of instruction for 4 days with our own Hart Moore, and then be really ready to use those boats. What a bargain!

Intermediates (or beginning Lasers) have one more group option this summer, from August 12-15. Get a couple of your friends to take the class with you, and then practice for the fall regattas!

You also can sign up for individual lessons with Hart, for $20 an hour. Call Hart on his phone, or see him around the club and talk to him. He’ll be more than happy to work with you and your kids.

For any questions on these programs, please contact Nica Waters at 434 295-1016. Happy sailing!

R-Home Magazine Features FBYC & Stove Point

Joseph L. Dennison on Tuesday July 15, 2008 12:06PM

The July/August issue of R-Home magazine features FBYC and Stove Point. The article entitled "Sail Away - A tiny peninsula in the Bay with a sailing tradition offers a slice of Americana and innocence" by managing editor Carrie Nieman Culpepper offers eight pages of text and 20 photographs. Included are racing photographs taken during one of our O-D Spring Series events as well as pictures of club grounds, the clubhouse interior, and cottages owned by FBYC club members. Run, don't walk, to the nearest bookstore to get a copy...it is well worth the price of purchase.

Waterfront Development at the Deltaville Maritime Museum

Joseph L. Dennison on Monday April 21, 2008 11:21PM

The Deltaville Maritime Museum at Holly Point Nature Park announces a major waterfront enhancement project. A substantial 240’ by 8’ pier encircling the shoreline restoration area implanted last year will be constructed through the generosity of seven local benefactors.

Museum officials believe that the new pier will greatly augment the recreational and education missions of the museum. Not only will the pier offer expanded access for watercraft visiting Holly Point facilities through an exponential increase in dockage space but also will allow groups of educators, students, patrons, and visitors to study the shoreline restoration area from a safe and spacious platform enveloping the site.

The seven donors who are making this project possible are: Allen & Frances Krowe, Bob & Erma Gary, Dieter & Mary Lib Hoinkes, Gene Ruark, Bob & Christie LeBoeuf, Bill & Elizabeth Perkins, and Tim Blackwood. Gene Ruark also serves as the Museum’s President this year. The pier is being constructed by Delta Marine of Deltaville and is scheduled for a May completion.

Pending Federal Legislation: S. 2766 Clean Boating Act of 2008

Neil R. Alley on Thursday March 20, 2008 06:50AM

Write your senator now !

There is an extreme risk that all recreational boaters in the U.S. will be required to obtain a permit from the EPA to discharge bilge water or even rain water off their decks. This issue arose from a law intended to keep invasive species like zebra mussels from being discharged by cargo ships and cruise liners. In 2006, a U.S. District Court decision struck down the 34-year permit exemption for recreational boats within the Clean Water Act. This decision will require the EPA to develop and implement a permitting system for all boats in the U.S. by September 30, 2008.

A new bill, S. 2766 Clean Boating Act of 2008, has been introduced in the Senate by Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) to correct this issue and needs several co-sponsors to be taken up by the full Senate. This new bill does not weaken or reverse any current environmental regulations. It simply allows boats to be operated in the present manner, without an onerous and costly permit system.

High Winds at FBYC

R. Noel Clinard on Tuesday March 11, 2008 04:04PM

On Saturday, March 8, FBYC experienced high winds gusting over 50 MPH from the Southwest. As the pictures illustrate, it capsized and compacted the club's 420s, blew a catamaran off its trailer onto an adjacent boat, and spun the South row Flying Scots around on their nose wheels. This experience once again illustrates the need for ground tie down systems in the boat yard, including the nose wheels.

All nine pictures are available here. They are under the Spring Cleanup Event - maybe there will be more work than we had hoped!

Sailing Events Schedule For 2008

R. Noel Clinard on Monday December 17, 2007 05:04PM

The Sailing Events Committee has drafted the 2008 FBYC Sailing Events Schedule - in Excel - now UPDATED THRU 12-20, which the Board has approved, subject to modification in publishing the Sailing Events Book. The Committee is now laboring to conform the book to the new schedule and recruiting volunteers for Race Committee and Social positions. The book must be finalized for the printer by the end of January.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the commands of the various club divisions who have responsibility for staffing the events, or give generously of your time when they call you for assistance. The club could not maintain its full schedule of events without your support. The schedule is a complex undertaking and it is possible the Committee has overlooked something, so please direct any comments on the schedule to Noel Clinard at nclinard@hunton.com.

Highlights of this year's schedule include:

Opening Day is April 19 and has been denominated one of the Offshore Spring Series.
Junior Week is June 16-20, with Opti-Kids the two weekends before.
Leukemia Cup is July 11-13 with all events at FBYC. This event will require a significant volunteer effort by members of all the sponsoring clubs, including FBYC.
The Long Distance One Design Race is scheduled for Friday, July 4, followed by a One Design Summer Seabreeze on Saturday July 5.
Sailing Against SIDs has been consolidated with Indian Summer, again a one day event. The hope is that the synergy of these two events will breathe life back into Indian Summer and offer Sailing Against SIDs a unique fund raising opportunity. Thanks to Matt and A.L. Braun for undertaking this important event and trying this new schedule. Significant efforts have been made to avoid conflicts with other local clubs and signature events such as Turkey Shoot, Southern Bay Race Week and Screw Pile.
The Annual Party on November 7 is just a placeholder at this point pending input from Social on location choice and availability. The actual date should be in the Sailing Events Book.

Thanks to the Committee for its focused effort over to draft this schedule and to Tom Roberts and Jon Deutsch for preparing the Schedule.

What are the keys to being a successful real estate attorney? “In my case because my practice involves commercial real estate, the transactions are usually complex and present unique challenges. My approach is to focus on the client’s goals in crafting the structure and details of the transactions. Each real estate transaction usually involves interacting with multiple parties with differing interests, and I have always tried to deal with those parties in a positive manner that will achieve both short-term and long-term results for my clients. Above all, in dealing with clients and transactions, I have tried to keep in mind the principle, ‘Do not confuse activity with progress.’”

What are the biggest challenges your clients face, given the current real estate environment? “The growth of government at all levels, the financial market conditions and the growing liability concerns of buyers, sellers and lenders present ever-increasing challenges and legal complexity to commercial real estate transactions. The goal of the successful real estate attorney is to keep abreast of current changes in the laws and to devise novel solutions to the clients’ needs.”

Noel Clinard's daughter Elizabeth on the stage in Denver

Website Maintenance Update

R. Strother Scott on Wednesday October 3, 2007 05:52PM

This may interest some of you. About 2 weeks ago, the day I got back from Canada, the web site broke and would not allow on-line registrations because the hard disk was full. It was fixed promptly, like in a day, but more cleanup has now been done.

The hard disk is 73GB, so I was amazed it could be full. A couple of months ago, BM deleted a Qmail log file which recorded the time stamps and other data of all the email that comes and goes from the web site - which as you may know is about 1% real email using our mailing lists and 99% spam. The log file was 4-5GB recording about 4 years data, none of which is needed.

The second thing that was found was 7GB of "bounce mail to the postmaster email user on FBYC" now all deleted.

Finally, over the years we have saved old copies of all the web site data, they found about 4 copies of www.fbyc.net and 3 copies of www.royalorchard.com and the old ones have now been deleted.

Sea Safety @ FBYC: You Shouldn't Have Missed It

George W. Burke on Wednesday April 18, 2007 04:59PM

73 members, community guests, and speakers attended the FBYC Safety at Sea Course, presented in the FBYC clubhouse, on 4/14/07.

Our speakers were led by moderator Sheila McCurdy who chairs the US Sailing National Faculty and is a US Sailing Passage Making Training instructor. Joining Sheila were Dr. Jim Barton, an emergency medicine specialist who served as ship’s physician for the 1985 trans-Atlantic Godspeed voyage, Jim Campbell, instructor for the USCG National Search and Rescue School, Pat Healy, former sailing instructor for the US Naval Academy and marine meteorologist, Ray Walden from the Deltaville fire department, and Chip Kinsey, an ATB commissioning captain and former tugboat skipper.

Each gave his perspective on sea safety issues pertinent to Bay and coastal sailing. The success of these speakers can be gauged by the remarks of one very experienced FBYC offshore racing skipper who said “before I came to this course I thought my knowledge of safety issues was on a 7 out of 10 level; instead, I was a 1.5!”

With their donations and good will, multiple sponsors helped to subsidize this program. These included Fawcett Boat, Annapolis Yacht Sales South, Chesapeake Yacht Sales, Gratitude Yachting Center, Norton’s Yacht Sales, Tartan C&C Yachts of Virginia, and West Marine.

Sea Safety and Seamanship @ FBYC

George W. Burke on Wednesday March 21, 2007 07:54AM

Fishing Bay Yacht Club is pleased to host “Sea Safety and Seamanship: a Primer for Bay and Coastal sailors”:

On April 14, 2007, Fishing Bay Yacht Club will host an all-day instructional course for cruising couples and distance racing sailors titled “Sea safety and Seamanship: a Primer for Bay and Coastal Sailors”. The curriculum will focus on teaching short handed crews how to handle selected challenges routinely encountered at sea as well as the unintended adventures. A panel of regional experts, along with Sheila McCurdy, chairman of the National Faculty for US Sailing and a US Sailing Passage Making Instructor, will guide the audience through a day of didactic sessions and live demonstrations to illustrate these lessons.

Tuition is $35 per person or $60 per cruising couple and includes box lunches, refreshments during breaks, and a course syllabus. Deadline for registration is Tuesday April 10, 2007. Because of limited seating, early registration is advised. Our speakers will begin promptly at 0830 in the FBYC Main Clubhouse, and end at 1630. Make registration and payment at www.fbyc.net or call George Burke at 804-359-1187.

Special links at the website will take you to the course schedule and directions to the Fishing Bay Yacht Club. (Note: this course is not affiliated with US Sailing sponsored events and does not satisfy entry requirements for US Sailing sanctioned races.)

Directions to the Gary Jobson event

Sue Willis on Tuesday March 13, 2007 10:31AM

Hello all,

In preparation for Friday Night's kickoff, I have directions to the University of Richmond below.  Additionally, I have attached a map of the campus.  We will be in the Moot Courtroom, in the Law School which is number 19 on the map. Once you arrive on campus you should see directional signage with the Regatta logo to get you to the building.

Please feel free to forward these direction on to anyone else who may need them.

Crew training

David Hazlehurst on Tuesday January 16, 2007 02:16PM

Courtesy of Carolyn and Ken Schmalenbeger the club had a booth at the Richmond Boat Show January 12-14 and recruited 33 crew candidates for the coming season. While the majority were interested in racing on off-shore boats the candidates included two Juniors interested in One Design Sailing and a retired USAF Navigator from Omaha whose sailing career started in Lasers in the mid-70's who may be interested in crewing on a Flying Scot.

For those who recruit crew from this group you owe thanks to Ed O'Connor, Mike Dale, Mike Miller, Sharon Bauer, Dennis and Kay King, Frank Reichel, Joe Roos, Brad Miller, Brooks Zerkel, Leroi Lissenden, Scott and Susan Birch, and John Wake for giving up their time to staff the booth. Also to two non-members, Chris Tulip and Bonnie Black, who have become regular crew on Oracle after joining our off shore program four and two years ago respectively.

In the Annapolis area it is traditional to hold get-togethers in a social setting for skippers and crew candidates and we plan to copy this lead by holding meetings at Shacklefords and the Legend Brewery over the next two months. Watch the Log and the web site for times. On-the-water crew training sessions are scheduled for April 1, 7 and 14, all leading up to Opening Day on April 21.

BoatU.S. Alert: Action Needed For Boating Safety Bill

R. Strother Scott on Friday January 12, 2007 05:39PM

January 12, 2007

Dear BoatU.S. Member,

We are writing to advise you that the Virginia Legislature will soon consider a bill, House Bill 1627, Boating Safety Education, that would require all motorboat and PWC operators to take a boating safety course and carry a certificate showing successful completion of a written test.

BoatU.S. supports this legislation because we believe it will make our crowded waterways safer for everyone by helping insure that boaters know the basic rules of the road and because all of the surveys we have done over the years have told us that our members support phased-in mandatory education.

We have, however, asked for two clarifications: First, that if a boater has taken a course in the past and has proof of successful completion, that person does not have to take a new course. Second, we have also recommended that a provision be added grandfathering operators with significant experience, such as having owned and operated a registered boat for the past 20 years.

Community sailing

David Hazlehurst on Monday August 21, 2006 05:15PM

The club has a commitment to encourage local youth to learn how to sail, and for a third consecutive year we have supported a program sponsored by the Middlesex County YMCA. Given the happy faces of the 7 students you see in the photograph there can be no question that these students enjoyed themselves. They sailed Optis double-handed initially, and later single-handed and given the heat index August 1-9 they put in a lot of pool time.

Thanks for spending six days in the August sun go to Courtney Faudree, the YMCA counsellor, and to the two former Commodores shown in the photograph. Also to Tom Sakach, grandson of Auzzie Jackson, for taking the students out in a 420 during the second three day session. Also to Norton Boats for providing lunch for the students and their parents on the closing day.

Following the 2005 classes two families decided to join the club adding three new faces to our Junior week program. Two of the newcomers to the club attended most of our Junior events Bay-wide over the past two months. We are looking forward to seeing other local students back at the club.

  • Avoid West Point traffic, save gas, be safe

    Lud H. Kimbrough on Friday May 26, 2006 12:28PM

Going to Urbanna Saturday night? Park at FBYC and take the chartered buses, departing FBYC at 1700 and 1800 hours, returning from Urbanna at 2200 and 2300 hours. Stay off the roads, enjoy the company, save the gas, and don't hassle with parking. Tired of the West Point Parking Lot? The following route takes 15 minutes longer than going through West Point with NO traffic, but since that's not going to happen again 'til next October, try this: These directions start at the intersection of Pole Green Road and Rte 360/Mechanicsville Turnpike. Pole Green Road is a shortcut for those leaving Richmond who can take I-95N then I-295E to the Pole Green exit, then Pole Green N. to Rte 360, thus avoiding most stoplights on 360. From Pole Green Road at 360, go East on 360 24 miles to Miller’s Tavern. You’ll see a sign “To Rte 17” pointing to the right – take this and you will follow Rte 684 for 10 miles to Center Cross. Turn right onto Rte. 17 South, take this to Saluda (turn left across from Food Lion), then stay on Rte 33 to Deltaville.

Press gang to seek crew at Boat Show

David Hazlehurst on Thursday January 12, 2006 10:46PM

Press gangs were used through the mid-1800's to provide crew for Her Majesty's Navy. Most of the crew who were pressed into service had prior sailing experience on trading ships. Given the ongoing need for crew at FBYC a latter day version of a press gang will be operating in Richmond over the next three days. All members are welcome to visit the Richmond Boat show and they may get lucky and see the gang in action.

Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans burns down

An extra edition of Scuttlebutt today reported on the tragedy at the Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans. We join all friends of sailing by putting them in our thoughts and prayers

The recent landing of Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast of the United States is appearing to be a significant tragedy, with the ripple effect likely to extend throughout North America. To those directly touched by this catastrophe, we here at Scuttlebutt wish you strength and determination as you seek to recover. - The Curmudgeon

66th Annual Regatta Survey to shut down on Wednesday

    R. Strother Scott on Thursday August 25, 2005 06:20PM

For the last week or so we have had a link to Take Survey Here on the top of the web page. So far we have had 46 responses, which is excellent. We encourage anyone who has not yet responded to take the survey soon before we close it down on Wednesday August 30.

It is easy to take and the information gained should be helpful to us as we try to run events that people enjoy. Thanks very much.

The survey results will be professionally analyzed and recommendations for improvement will be made to FBYC's regatta committee and to the Long-Range Planning committee. In addition, a summary of the survey results will be sent to all participants.

Dvl 0203 We have had terrific photography submissions from both Jon Deutsch and David Dunigan. Jon's pictures were posted in the usual FBYC way - on a web page for the event.

I have posted David's pictures using www.flickr.com. They are easy for me to upload in volumne, and they product a neat slide show. You can reference them all at Dunigans Pictures or you can go straight to the 4 different slide shows depending on your interest in Schooner Virginia, 420s , Optis , or Lasers .

Stingray Harbour Yacht Club Yard Sale

Unknown Unknown on Wednesday May 25, 2005 05:37PM

On Saturday, June 11th, the Stingray Harbour Yacht Club will hold its Annual Yard Sale which will be followed by an afternoon cookout. We all have those extra boat items we don’t use and have been carrying around in out boats or stored in our garages for years. Well, your troubles are over because you can take the opportunity to place all your excess nautical items in the SHYC Yard Sale. Now is the time to clean out the boat and put all those items aside until June 11th. Remember, one boat’s upgrade could be another’s “good deal.”

Thanks - Bill Simpson Commodore SHYC

    Web site issues

    R. Strother Scott on Sunday April 24, 2005 09:42PM

Some of you had trouble logging into the web site the last couple of days. The problem is hopefully fixed now, please let me know if there are continuing problems. For those interested in the details, there are at least 3 different things going on.

With the new server for the web site, we hoped the pages would load faster. A month ago, we identified an issue and solved it so the home page loaded faster. But the events pages were still slow - for the same reason, but it was too time consuming to fix each page. On Saturday, the "expert" finally looked at it, and cured the problem with a little change. All events web pages need to know who you are, so they can tell you if you are registered for the events on the page. The "look up who you are" process was completely inefficient, and has now been fixed and the events pages are now fast as they should be.

But in that simple fix, it lost track of who some of you were, so when you logged in you were rejected with a zope error. That was fixed this afternoon, I hope.

The final "slow pages" are those that you need to see when you "register" for events. We want the system to "autofill" as much of your information as possible, and it turns out that because the server had to look thru 11,000 sets of information that had been typed in, it took a long time to decide what to "autofill" for you when you tried to register. So we have turned that off, the registration pages have speeded up, but you may see less information automatically filled in. The programmer will be upgrading the computer to newer software, and we expect to try a different "autofill system" - just have the computer fill in the same information that you filled in the last time you registered - not from "internet cookies" or "sessions" but by looking up the last information you typed in when you registered - that can be done really quickly!

Bottom line - we are trying to perfect the system to make it fast and easy for everybody. Thank you for putting up with the amateur led volunteer effort.

A quick visit to Deltaville yesterday exposed some important newsworthy items. First. the Town & Country Store had its grand opening, Richfood was giving away a dozen free eggs to the first 100 customers, and the Middlesex County High School Band held a celebretory concert at 9:30AM.

At FBYC, the work on the new road onto the new land was progressing very well. This view from the new Clubhouse upstairs Porch shows the road making its way from the clubhouse over toward the Jacob-Swenson house, where it turns left and heads to the old stables.

    Gary Jobson Tonight!

David Hazlehurst on Friday March 25, 2005 08:55AM

From today's Scuttlebutt with no added comments.

    * From Michelle Slade (edited to our 250 word limit): I just attended the Corinthian YC (Tiburon, Calif), first evening of its 2005 speaker series with Gary Jobson. I know this has been said before but it simply can never be said enough - Gary is truly a gift to the sport we all love. It's been both a heart rending and heart warming experience to watch him over the past few years battle through his illness. To see him healthy and happy today, his humor-incensed enthusiasm for the sport a complete inspiration is awesome. I wonder how often we stop and appreciate how much he's brought to this sport in this country.

His presentation was fantastic, in particular his "Ultimate Sailing" footage, which should become compulsory viewing for all kids regardless - how could they not get a grip on the thrill sailing offers after watching that? In fact, I am going to order myself a copy for those moments when I feel that, 'I need to get the hell out of Dodge.' Obviously very dear to Gary was his overview of the America's Cup. It's a great event, very addictive, notwithstanding all the related drama. However, as Gary noted, there is something terribly amiss in that two of the most highly respected A-Cup skippers - Coutts and Cayard - will not participate in 2007 for all the reasons previously made public. The competition simply won't be as good as it could be, which is unfortunate - it will be just, different.

Cable TV wire now buried under new land

    R. Strother Scott on Saturday March 5, 2005 03:15PM

Two independent sources have confirmed that the Middlesex County Cable TV people were on site last week and have now buried the Cable TV line to Stove Point as it crosses the FBYC property. They successfully avoided cutting all water lines that we knew about. Apparantly some water lines were unknown! The next step is to remove the old above ground cable TV wire, which might be done Monday.

Great job and thanks to Chip Hall, Grounds Chair, for getting this long awaited project underway.

    FBYC Marine Returning to Iraq

    Lud H. Kimbrough on Sunday January 9, 2005 08:49AM

FBYC member Parke Smith, of Weapons Company (3rd Battalian - 4th Marines) has been dispatched for his second deployment in Iraq. Parke has helped out countless times with Race Committee and other FBYC duties, and was sorely missed last summer while he was in Iraq.

2005 Draft Sailing Events Schedule Released

    R. Strother Scott on Thursday December 23, 2004 01:26PM

The Sailing Events Committee has been busy working on the 2005 Sailing Schedule and are now preparing the Sailing Instructions to go in the Sailing Events Book. A draft of the 2005 schedule is available to Members in PDF format and I have also added the proposed events to the web site. The Link to Sailing Events now takes you to 2005, and you can see the The Complete Schedule or just your favorite Division: Offshore , One-Design or Junior Division. Please note that some events are marked with a "maybe" and these will be modified as the final decisions are made.

We do not yet have the dates of all the Cruising Events, they are very polite and develop their schedule around the other divisions. There is ample opportunity for typographical mistakes in preparing and posting the schedule. Please let us (or the appropriate sailing officer - see List of Board Members ) know if you see any errors or apparent problems.

    Merry Christmas to all

The Racing Rules of Sailing 2005-2008

David Hazlehurst on Tuesday December 14, 2004 12:46PM

Membership in USSA, the US Sailing Association, offers a choice of a current Rule Book or a copy of Safety Recommendations for Cruising Boats. Details on membership, including the annual cost can be found on www.ussailing.org. Along with a membership card applicants usually receive a credit of $25 or more for purchases at West Marine, and a discount on registration fees at most regattas. Both the December Log and the December 13 issue of Southern Bay Racing News you can use that is posted each week on the club web site contain information on Rules Seminars that are being sponsored by clubs on the Southern Bay early in 2005. You can also buy a Rule Book from US Sailing without joining the Association, but with or without the membership it is good practice to have a rule book if you plan to race.

    Remembrance of Terry Quinn

    Jonathan T Moody on Friday January 30, 2004 11:40AM

Terry Quinn passed away last weekend. Terry was my friend and I will miss him very much. I met Terry though the Richmond Triumph Club and I was immediately attracted to his zest for life. Terry was the type of guy who was always upbeat and always greeted friends with a boisterous “ hello young fellow!!”

Terry was an institutional equity trader at Davenport Company, an occupation that was especially fitting for him as he was always trying to get in the middle of things and find out where the true market was. He bought and sold several cars while I knew him and had a knack for finding car parts (which are frequently hard to find for our ancient little British cars!).

It was only after I knew him for sometime that I learned that he too was passionate about sailing, and that he had a love for boats and the water equal to or better than my own. I believe he was happiest on his boat. Frequently, we would drive around boat yards in the area to just look at boats and see what boats were for sale or what types of projects people were doing on their boats. Terry loved his boat and our yacht club. When I mentioned that I was interested in joining the club, he immediately volunteered to sponsor me for membership. He told me several times that he loved watching Junior week and that he wished he could rent a grandkid just to have them participate in that event.

I found myself smiling whenever I was around Terry. When I think about that and why that was the case, it wasn’t just because he usually was full of corny jokes, it was because of his outlook on life and the fact that I knew he was interested in people. He made people around him forget whatever trivial problems they were faced with and focus on the moment. Perhaps that’s why I wasn’t expecting him to go so soon. I thought I’d be able to take him to look at the boatyards this spring and maybe even take him out for a sail. Goodbye Terry, may you rest in peace.

Rising sea level increases hurricane risk

Unknown Unknown on Saturday December 13, 2003 08:14PM

    Full Interactive story at http://www.vims.edu/newsmedia/press_release/tide.htm

The hurricane of 1933, widely known as the "storm of the century" for Chesapeake Bay, generated a storm surge in Hampton Roads of 5.84 feet, more than a foot higher than the 4.76 ft storm surge recorded for Hurricane Isabel. Yet many long-time Tidewater residents say that the high-water marks left by Isabel equaled or exceeded those of the 1933 storm.

A new analysis of sea-level records by VIMS emeritus professor Dr. John Boon helps explain the apparent discrepancy and suggests that future storms will pose even greater flood risks. Boon also argues that changing the way storm tides are referenced could help coastal residents understand and minimize potential impacts.

    Rebuilding and clean-up

David Hazlehurst on Tuesday September 23, 2003 12:01PM

Many members have been back to Deltaville to check their property and help clean up debris since Isabell left last Friday. And those who live there have certainly had their fill of clearing roadways, removing trees from their homes, and living without power and water.

For this coming weekend all racing has been cancelled and all members are invited to the club to help clean up debris and repair docks starting at 8.30 am Saturday. After two days of concerted effort we will be in a much better position to decide on whether we can hold any more races in 2003 for trailered One Design boats starting on October 4. But an announcement on the schedule, for both the One Design, Junior and Off-shore Divisions will be made next Monday, September 29.

In the meantime members are asked to plan on being at the club ready to start help resurrect the east and Fishing Bay docks, and clean up the grounds early Saturday morning. You should bring your own sandwiches, drinks and a cooler of ice as well as rakes and other tools. One of our newest members has already called offering to bring a chain saw and a generator. And our Manager is working on getting Porta Johns to serve in the abscence of power and water. Eric Powers, who made a living building docks in a former life, has volunteered to lead the dock rebuilding effort and has put in two days hard labor on the Jackson Creek side. He is also arranging for the necessary boards hardware to be available. Bring your hammers and wrecking bars.

What we are able to salvage of the best of all racing seasons, the Fall, will depend on how much progress we make next weekend. Please make every effort to attend, and after the clean up session is declared over, take time out to put your mast up and get ready for the following weekend. All efforts will be welcomed.

For pictures of some of our damage. please visit http://www.fbyc.net/Club/Photos/Isabel

    Good neighbor opportunity

David Hazlehurst on Monday September 22, 2003 01:40PM

Many members and employees in Deltaville are without water and power. Please help them by taking bottled water to the club when you next visit. We'll find a way to get it to the needy, and your concern will be appreciated. Let's go with at least four one gallon bottles per vehicle. And least you wonder while we have some 11M gallons of treated water in our storage tank we cannot access this until power is restored.

    Isabel aftermath

David Hazlehurst on Sunday September 21, 2003 09:27PM

The club came through Isabels rampage with no obvious damage to any of our buildings, but with major damage to the Fishing Bay dock and the East dock on Jackson Creek. As of Saturday the road along Fishing Bay had been cleared of downed trees allowing ready access to the club. Those few who visited the club that day had a taste of what to expect after seeing downed trees on the drive to Deltaville, and the carnage exacted on many of the docks on Fishing Bay. Three large pines near the water tank fell into the Jackson Creek parking lot, and some trees on the Stull property fell over the fence dividing FBYC property from our new neighbor. As of late Sunday almost all of the downed trees had been cut up ready for removal, and some few members had made great progress clearing up limbs blown from trees.

These pictures are taken of the Stove Point Road well past the Club on Stove Point. The club is without power and phone service and likely to stay that way for some days, if not weeks. There was no damage to any club boats and Mr. Roberts is close to first in line at Deltaville Dockyard for being put back in the water. One boat at the end of the middle dock received significant damage when the pilings it was tied to failed. Some three other boats in slips received what might be decribed as cosmetic damage but no boats in the Fishing Bay lot appeared to have been damaged. This may be due to a large majority of members heeding the warning that they tie their boats to their trailers or racks and take their masts down.

An announcement about next weekends program will follow, but it goes without saying that there will be plenty of opportunities for repairing docks and cleaning up the grounds. Many boards have already been replaced thanks in particlar to Eric and Austin Powers, David Clark, David Hinkle and Jim Morrison all of whom put in long hours. But most of our thanks must go to Brandy Kennard, our Assistant Manager, for his untiring efforts over the days before Isabel's forecast arrival became an awful reality.

Isabel Eye has passed NOAA Bouy #41002

    R. Strother Scott on Thursday September 18, 2003 11:43AM

Bouy #41002 is about 200 miles SE of Hatteras. Looking at the four graphs in Read More which were as of 10AM this morning, you can see that the air pressure dropped dramatically and now is rising again, the wind has shifted from the NE to Westerly.

You can also see the wind gusts have peaked at 65 Knots and the wave height at about 30 feet.

    NOAA Weather Bouys off Hatteras

    R. Strother Scott on Wednesday September 17, 2003 09:53AM

NOAA has a number of weather buoys off the east coast. You can check out your choice at http://seaboard.ndbc.noaa.gov/Maps/Southeast.shtml . The pages are very slow to load in your browser.

One of the buoys is #41002 - a bouy anchored about 200 miles SE of Cape Hatteras at 32.27 N 75.42 W (32°16'19"N 75°25'02"W) in a Water depth: 3,785.6 m with a Watch circle radius: 3,100 yards. You can visit the web page for the Buoy at http://seaboard.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.phtml?$station=41002 Once that page loads, you can see the wind speed - wave height at that location - which is still well in front of Isabel. At 8am today, the readings were:

Wind Direction (WDIR): NE ( 40 deg true )
    Wind Speed (WSPD): 27.2 kts
    Wind Gust (GST): 35.0 kts
    Wave Height (WVHT): 23.6 ft
Dominant Wave Period (DPD): 17 sec

Read more shows the increasing wave height in the last 5 days.

Hurricane On The Way?? --Make Sure Your Property Is Secured

David Hazlehurst on Sunday September 14, 2003 09:33PM (1 comment)

Notice to all members who have boats in slips, drysail or the small boat parking area in front of the new clubhouse: With the storm warnings we have all read, seen or heard about comes yet another warning. You are responsible for the security of any boat stored on club property. You would be well advised to insure your docklines can be adjusted from the dock, to remove roller furling head sails, main sails and other items that create windage. For boats on trailers and racks, you would be well advised to remove covers, drop masts and tie your boats down.

Many members have already taken these precautions and others are removing sails, etc. If you plan to take your boat out of the water, you would be well advised to call your favorite dockyard. If the storm passes us by, moves out to sea or just peters out, you will not have wasted your time taking these precautions. They are an essential element of good seamanship whereby you do everything possible to protect your own property and just possibly someone's life.

    Weekends at the ranch

David Hazlehurst on Thursday August 7, 2003 03:16PM

Another day, another dollar. Another month started off with a bang Friday August 1, with a Board meeting at the club and a reception for new members. Some 55 people stayed for dinner, and it was good to meet partners and newcomers who have not used the club as much as our hard core members. Hopefully they all enjoyed their new found friends and will come back regularly. Saturday Sam and Nancy Stoakley did a great job hosting the racers after the Cruising Regatta. The 14.5 mile race with a staggered start was masterminded by Chip Hall, and after it was all over Commodore Cole finished in second place, helped immeasurably by the loan of a well trained crew member, Robert Jureit, who joined the club as recently as June.

Sunday started off quietly, but by noon we were way beyond starting white caps. So much so that David Porter, who relishes heavy air, held back until the wind speed fell back into the teens. We suspect he may have been nursing his second new hip, but expect to see his transom this coming weekend if you sail a Laser. The Junior shed was a hive of activity with Jay Buhl and Melanie Clore most noticeable amongst others getting boats ready for the Annual Regattas this coming weekend and next Tuesday. Other notables were Chris Jankowski, his wife Maria and two children, also members since June. Chris was working avidly with his new found crew, Alex O'Toole, on his Jet 14 for the upcoming Nationals in Annapolis. Later our first visitors for the Annual One Design Regatta arrived, five Albacores, staying over after sailing at Ware River.

There's good news and bad news on our head coach, Melanie Clore who has made a wonderful impression on our Junior program this summer. She will be teaching in Lancaster County starting at month end, so will not be far away. The bad news is that August 12 is her last day. She is however willing to make herself available for private lessons until school starts. More about that later in an e-mail to the membership. Ironically she has had at least as many calls for help from members this past week as she has had all summer. Perhaps some parents have recognised what a good thing they have missed.

For the Rip Van Winkles amongst us we must remind them this coming Saturday and Sunday we will be holding our 64th Annual Regatta. And on Tuesday,August 12 we will be holding the August Junior Regatta. A Notice of Race is posted in the Sailing Events book with Kelly O'Toole as Social Chair. Y'all come out and race!

140 Web site Users - more Members Only Changes

    R. Strother Scott on Tuesday August 5, 2003 05:48PM

We now have about 140 members signed up for passwords. Members will notice after they login to the Members Only section, that the second line on the navigation screen will now read something like:
Members | Edit Your Information | Log Out |

Once you Log in, the web site will remember who you are. As a result, as long as you use the same computer, you will not need to LogIn when you reboot your computer. But if you are using someone else's computer, please remember to Log Out when you finish in order to avoid any unauthorized use of our password protected web pages.

You may also use Edit Your Information to edit the data that you submitted at SignIn. So if you want to give yourself a address@fbyc.com, or change your password, you can do it here.

Please let me know if you run across any problems with the new system.

Over 100 Members have received new Members Only passwords

    R. Strother Scott on Wednesday July 30, 2003 01:09PM

We have implemented a new system for permissions to visit the Members Only section of the web site. About 110 people have visited the Sign Up page in the past 2 weeks and been approved. In the Sign Up process, you pick your own username and password. You may also select a FBYC e-mail address - called an alias. Any e-mail sent to youraddress@fbyc.net will be automatically forwarded to your actual address. Once you are approved, Mary Spencer can change your username, password, or FBYC alias. (And when you report to Mary that your real e-mail address has changed, the FBYC alias will automatically send your mail to the new address, once she changes her records.)

We have also changed the "Navigation" links at the top of each page. Public visitors will see links to Members Only, Sign Up, and Forgot Password. As part of the Sign Up process, Mary will also assign you a role. Depending on your role, after you have logged into Members Only the links at the top will vary based on your permissions.

    Rosegill weekend

Unknown Unknown on Wednesday April 2, 2003 02:03PM

I've been asked to do an article on the annual Rosegill race weekend. Would appreciate hearing from the race organizers with some back ground. The article wouldn't appear until late in the summer but must be in by June 10 so I'll need to hear from you before then. Want some history of the race, # of boats, classes, anything that might be of general interest for a page article. I'll try for photos but if anyone comes up with some good action shots and would share them I'd appreciate them as they'll likely be better than mine. Thanks

    One Heartbeat Away

    Gilbert L. Miles on Wednesday March 19, 2003 03:46PM

One of the most disturbing items of news to hear is that someone was injured and died because no one knew what to do. That's an unconscionable position to be in. How would you feel if a stranger, friend or even family member died from stroke, cardiac arrest, or drowning because you didn't know First Aid or CPR?

Well, you can do something about it. Get certified in Standard First and CPR (adult/child). It's easy. There are many organizations who provide this training for minimal cost, such as the American Red Cross and American Heart Association. Most courses are open to adults and children. One you should consider is run by Teresa Mason, Director, Pharmacy MCV. Click Read More... for program details.

In the meantime, there are several ways to see the schedule on the web site. Please explore the Sailing Events Pages to find what interests you the most. Many of you may wish to click on one of the printable versions of the schedule and stick it on the refrigerator along with everything else.

Wayland and Maggie Rennie lead FBYC group to a three week tour of New Zealand

    Anthony D. Sakowski on Wednesday March 5, 2003 06:45AM

Fishing Bay Yacht Club members and friends traveled throughout the North and South Islands of New Zealand for three weeks. Highlights of the trip included a five day cruise through the beautiful Bay of Islands area of the North Island, as well as three days in Auckland exploring all the energy and scenes involved with the Americas Cup. We toured on our chartered sailboat the site of the Cup race courses that included a parade of 1,000 boats. Drysail Hoist Gets A Lift

    Gilbert L. Miles on Monday February 24, 2003 01:52PM

No matter how big and ugly one might be, we all need someone to love us. The same is true with the drysail hoist. Not the prettiest piece of sailing equipment I've ever seen but for others, the ones it matters to most, its "their baby." Well, finally, its getting some much needed repair. Also, a preventative maintenance inspection is going to be completed. This should reduce routine failures but it will mean that it will be leaving Fishing Bay for a few weeks for a visit to the shop.

    Tired Lines not Humerous

    Gilbert L. Miles on Wednesday January 22, 2003 09:01PM

Just a seasonal reminder to check your mooring lines (as Chapman's refers to them) or dock lines (as most of us refer to them) whether your boat is in a slip or on the beach, winter winds and tides put heavy strain on lines. Especially, when most of us are not thinking of sailing in the least. A simple check might save damage. At a minimum, please inspect your bow, stern and spring lines. The single purpose for this inspection is potential "line failure", whether it is for now or in the future. All owners should know the proper type and size line for their particular situation.

Take special care to check for line fatigue, chaffing and rot. Many failures result from wearing over time, over load, rubbing against the pier, sunlight and moisture. Also, be sure to inspect your boat's deck fittings such as chocks and cleats. While you are at it, might as well check to what the other end is connected. There might be a loose pier cleat, plank or piling. If you find a problem with the pier, contact the docks committee.

Koedel, Jr. Denames Boat, Observers Freeze

Chris Gaenzle on Monday January 13, 2003 02:45PM

John and Kara Koedel denamed their new yacht last weekend. Several observers, including the Koedel's, Sr., Jeff Branflick, Chris Gaenzle, and various children attended. The denaming ceremony is part of John's elaborate two-part denaming/renaming ceremony for their new-to-them Ericson 38. After the denaming ceremony, John commented that he was disappointed with turnout for this January event, "I really thought all the non-spin guys would come out for this", he said, "maybe we'll get more people in the spring for the renaming ceremony." No word yet on what that name will be, however.

CBYRA Region 4 Awards-Special one for Joe Hallissy

Lin McCarthy on Friday December 27, 2002 04:03PM

January 18th is the date of the Region 4 CBYRA High Point Awards presentation/dinner.  At this dinner, a special award from CBYRA will be presented to Joe Hallissy for his excellent race management work and dedication to all sailors, especially southern Chesapeake Bay racers.  The award was announced by 2002 CBYRA President Joe Krolak at the annual CBYRA meeting in Galesville, but the actual presentation will be in Joe's "home region" at the annual Region 4 high point awards ceremony.  So, the 2002 region high point awards recipients and Joe will be recognized at this event.
WHERE:  Fishing Bay Yacht Club, Fishing Bay/Deltaville, Virginia
        WHEN:  Saturday, JANUARY 18, 2003 - cocktails at 5:30pm - 6:30pm;  dinner at 6:30pm - 7:30pm, awards presentations begin at 7:30pm.

    2003 Sailing Events

David Hazlehurst on Monday December 9, 2002 10:21AM

The Sailing Events Committee completed development of the 2003 sailing schedule in their 3 December meeting, and because there was an unexpected delay in printing we were able to include it in the December Log. The proposed schedule will be presented to the Board at their December meeting, scheduled for Tuesday 10 December at which time it is usually approved for publication. Happily this year we are ahead of the game.

The Sailing Events Committee welcomes suggestions for changes or additions. However given the scope of the proposed program requests for additions may be received with a level of enthusiasm usually reserved for protests after a long day on the water. But I promise, the Events Committee will listen to all inputs. Club members can find a listing of committee members on page 104 of the Yearbook.

Over the next few weeks Race Committee Chairs and Lieutenant Commanders for the Junior, Off-shore and One Design Divisions will be getting committments from members to help staff the more than 50 sailing events scheduled for 2003, excluding the massive effort for Junior week. Cruising Events are of a different ilk, given the distance these sailors generally travel, and most times the participants take care of their more relaxed starts, and their more elaborate after race libations. Regardless staffing all these events will require at least one day of help from each member. Please help your callers, they have an unenviable task. I know, I've done it.

    FBYC Communications Survey Results

    R. Strother Scott on Monday November 4, 2002 09:37AM

The recent survey showed that the communications from FBYC are really good. Thanks to everyone who participated. At the CCV dinner Randy Alley drew Ric Anderson's name from the 120surveys submitted. As a result he won a Free pass for 2003 social events

I conclude that FBYC will best communicate though a combination of a printed monthly Log, timely e-mail notices and a continuously updated web site. The results of the survey are now available on-line

    Indian Summer Regatta, October 12-13

David Hazlehurst on Monday October 14, 2002 05:27PM

    Indian Summer Results now available.
Some 40 skippers ignored the dire weather forecast and enjoyed good racing Saturday and so-so racing Sunday plus a surfeit of good fellowship after racing on both days. All of the racers were winners and the only losers were those who chose to stay home. Before discussing the event it's appropriate to acknowledge the help that so many gave, and that is so essential for running a regatta. Most of the help was recruited beforehand but there were a good number who agreed to do double duty and some few who were pressed into service and appeared to do this willingly. Those who must be acknowledged, albeit as a group, are the members who provided bats for the three race courses. It is not possible for us to run invitational regattas without this help with borrowed boats.

  • Web Site Software Upgrade Complete

    R. Strother Scott on Wednesday November 28, 2001 03:38PM

Several months ago our web site software was upgraded by Baymountain, a company in Richmond led by our Offshore Lt. Commander, Mark Wensell. The upgrade was completed - except the ability to search articles on the main FBYC web page. So recently the main page has displayed all the posted articles. Now we are pleased to say that the search capability has returned, so the number of articles, and therefore the time to load the page into your browser, has been reduced.

You can find older articles by clicking on Search, or the Subject Images. Thanks to Mark and Baymountain for providing and continuing to manage the software and infrastructure for our web site. Please let us know if you see some areas of the web site that act peculiar as we had to make a number of changes to bring it back to how it was before we started.

Please at email me or call me at 804-776-6950 so we will know how much food to prepare. Bob Kates, Grounds Chrm.

Web Site software upgraded by Baymountain

    R. Strother Scott on Friday September 14, 2001 09:53AM

FBYC is fortunate to have its website hosting provided by Baymountain, a small company in Richmond led by our Offshore Lt. Commander, Mark Wensell. The site uses open source software - primarily Zope and Squishdot.

In the weeks before the Stingray Regatta a problem in posting, editing and deleting news articles surfaced. Recently Baymountain has upgraded our site to Zope 2.3.3 and Squishdot 1.3.0. The upgrade is almost complete - everything seems to be working fine, except we are still unable to search articles on the main FBYC web page.

Thanks to Mark and Baymountain for providing and continuing to manage the software and infrastructure for our web site.

Eric has been working with Mark and Joanna Wensell and has now been able to make the Zope version of a FBYC web site work. The members of the Web Committee now need to post content.

Web committee members should go to:

    http://fbyc.net:8080/Devel/manage

there is a folder called "Squishtest" where they need to post content.
