2017 Cruising Division Information

The 2017 Cruising Division schedule offers a variety of destinations on the Chesapeake Bay. The Bay has some of the best cruising waters in the world in close proximity to Fishing Bay Yacht Club. We anticipate taking full advantage of our location. The primary objective of the Division is to provide a schedule in which everyone can both participate and enjoy the pleasures of cruising. Please consult the Cruising Events Schedule to see how our destinations will appeal to both new and seasoned cruisers.

There are several “Captain’s Choice” cruises, normally with a potluck dinner on Thursday or Friday night. The objective of these Captain’s Choice cruises is to sail to nearby destinations, where any size boat can participate.  The destinations of the Captain’s Choice cruises will be somewhat dependent upon the wind direction and sea conditions, with specific destinations chosen earlier in the week (or even the night before), in order to optimize the sailing for the expected conditions.

Each of our events chairs follow guidelines for the conduct of a successful cruise. The guidelines are outlined here:

  • Keep an accurate record of out-of-pocket expenses, with receipts, incurred on behalf of the club, and submit these using the most recent spreadsheet to John Galloway for reimbursement from our club treasurer.
  • Communicate during the six weeks prior to departure, using every available FBYC communication tool to announce your event, briefly updating the activities and itinerary and reiterating how members can sign-up through you, or the website, or both. These tools include: a) website announcements, b) e-mail blasts to the division by the Cruising Division Commander, and c) articles and announcements in the Log. Remember that the Log announcements must be submitted to the Log Streamer (Amy McGlynn at anmcglynn@gmail.com) by the 5th of the preceding month in order to make the publication deadline.
  • Provide a summary of your event to the website within a week after your return. Remember to include high-quality (not condensed for email or website) digital photos, if feasible. Photographs for the Log should be limited to a few of your best shots representing the cruise, and they should be sent via email to the Log Streamer. Try to include information on participation and highlights of the trip. Your website summary may be used as part of the Division’s final report to the Board in November.
  • Think ahead and watch the weather. You can prevent a poor turnout by keeping your cruisers abreast of weather-related changes in plans during the week prior to departure.
  • Remember to assign a VHF channel for communications during the cruise and share cell phone numbers as a backup. The Cruise Chair may want to furnish a spreadsheet or Word document to all participants containing information about the participants, i.e. boat names, sizes, drafts, times joining the cruise, etc. Keeping in touch is important for purposes of safety, convenience and collegiality.
  • Do not hesitate to ask for volunteer assistance from your fellow cruisers to set up for an event, or to contribute an appetizer or side dish, or to clean up after one of our social get togethers.

Please register at www.fbyc.net for each event and be sure to call the trip leader with any questions about the specific event that you plan to attend. We hope to see you on the water.
